Happiness...we all crave it, seek it, work for it, demand it, command it, embrace it, and bathe in it. When it doesn’t materialize on cue, we are saddened and disappointed. And when it is swirling around us, we are often oblivious to its magic.

The late Indian philosopher and guru Osho tells a tale of going to a lake and laying in the cool, soothing water watching birds fly by and clouds drifting past a blue serene sky. Just by being present and drinking in the beauty and splendor of life, all his emotional turbulence drifted away replaced by peaceful thoughts and nurturing feelings. So happy was Osho that he shared this experience with a friend who was in emotional pain. The next day the friend raced down to the lake to experience happiness. Hours passed as he stared into the sky – he saw the soaring birds, he saw the puffy clouds, he felt the cool water…but where was this happiness that was supposed to be so attainable? He was still miserable and dissatisfied with his current state. Upon hearing his friend’s disappointing experience, Osho counseled him saying, “Happiness is not a target…it is a state only attainable by being in the present moment. Surrender to the moment and to the universe and happiness will unfold within you. Point yourself at the target of happiness…and you will miss.”

Hi Toni,

Thanks so much for that. I needed to be reminded about happiness, especially today.

Today, I have not been focussing on the good things in my life as much as usual. And, I haven't been happy. I have been oblivious to its magic.

This evening, I'm reminding myself of all the good things that I have in my life right now, and how close I came to loosing them all.

I really did need your post. Thanks again, Toni.

Take care,

Carol

Hi Toni.

Interesting post! I remember when I first got sober. I was complaining(bitching) wahhh wahh wahhhh. I want to be happy and I want it now!

I was told that true happiness comes as a by-product of being sober and working the steps. I had experienced happiness in the past but it was fleeting, here and gone before I knew what it was!

Today is a different story. My bad days are nothing compared to how it was before!

Anyways, there I go talking about myself again!

Toni, you are a definite example to me of how this program works if we work for it! I'm still trying to learn how to start one's day over!

Oh well, have a great sober weekend!

Hi Carol and Justin,

I thought it was interesting too, so I posted it, a different look that is about something that is just sitting in the front of own noses, so we miss the concept a lot, I know I do.

And Justin, you just gave me a good laugh.  If we are Posting, we have to talk about ourselves.  Can you imagine how crazy making this Board would me, if I said, Hi, my name is Toni, and I want to talk about Justin or Phil, makes my hair hurt, thinking about that. HAHA.

Toddle Loo,

Toni
