Daily Tip
Four Common Stressors

Stress is often a matter of how we frame a situation, rather than the situation itself, and how we react to potential stressors is greatly influenced by our internal reaction to external situations. Although the components that make up stress can be complex, simple steps can help reduce stress.

Try avoiding the following common stressors and see how you feel after a week or two:

  1. Caffeine and other stimulant drugs. Often these make us more jumpy, anxious and fearful, and interfere with relaxation, rest and sleep.
  2. Sound. With a penetrating influence on the nervous system, it is not surprising that some types of sound increase our level of arousal and can make us tense and anxious.
  3. News. News reports can profoundly affect your mental state, increasing anxiety and possibilities for worry.
  4. Agitated minds. Being around others who are agitated can easily affect your level of agitation. Whenever possible, stick to interacting with those who are centered and calm.

OHHH!!!

The caffeine... can relate, but not ready to give that up!! NOOO!!! actually, am down to about 2 cups in the a.m... don't know how that happened... maybe the heat makes me drink less??

And noise,,, ahhh yes... in the car, I love music but at home? Pin-Drop silence... blisss... (like those old Sprint commercials with the pin-drop... hahahaha)

Also I would have to add to my own personal list of stressors:

Small children between the ages of 2 and 7... LOL

Vibrations... when my dishwasher, clothes washer and microwave are running in harmony, eeeegaddds!!!! So, actually... housework is a stressor for me...?? Hahahahahahaaa

On a serious note, though, this stress-management thing has been just as important for my own recovery as a lot of other things.. have been working on this from the beginning, and will have to say that it is CRUCIAL to my recovery to recognize and manage stress in my life.

Hi Toni,

Since I re-joined AA I have tried to eliminate as much stress from my life as I could. I know that stress will always be a major trigger for me.

I don't drink caffeine and my house is always quiet and peaceful. I try not to get too involved with news and current events, but I'm still working on calming my agitated mind!

A few more triggers for me to avoid are:-

Looking after the neighbour's gerbils for two weeks!

Having computer problems

Getting another horrible eye infection

But, as long as I remember to keep things in the day, I'll be in with a good chance.

Take care,

Carol
