I haven't been in AA that long, but I know at least once we've had someone in there that reeked of alcohol, she'd definitely been drinking before the meeting. No one had a problem with it, maybe she heard what she needed to hear that night, who knows? I've had people in my group tell me when I first came in that they used to have to drink a couple before a meeting until they started to get something out of the meetings and were ready to stop. Keep going to those meetings, even if you have had a couple of drinks, maybe you'll hear something that will hit home to you. Your next meeting is the most important one.

HI Kate,

The Answer is YES, the only REQUIREMENT for AA Membership, is a DESIRE to stop drinking.

You not only can go to that meeting, but by sitting in Attendance at any Meeting, you are a Member of Alcoholics Anonymous.

For so many years, I would save those drinks till after the Meetings, in retrospect, I think I would have been better off, and been able to get more REAL Help, if I had had the Drinks before the Meeting, not afterwards. Drinking afterwards kept it in SECRET.

Gotta ask you, WHO TOLD YOU to just keep drinking, whoever that was, was surely not a member of AA, nor knowledgable about how this Program works??? Really Baffled by that comment, so would you please tell us who it was that told you that???

It simple takes what it takes to get in to the Rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous.

So glad you are going, that is the Main Thing.

Saying a Prayer for you dear.

Let us know how the meeting goes, o.k.?????

Love and Hugs to you dear, Toni

PS. I had to go back and re-read you Post, so I edited it with the question of who told you to just keep drinking????????????????

All I could thinK when I read that was........DUH! WHAT?

Do you think they would be okay with me bringing a six pack? Because some of those people really go on and on...it would sure make it less painful

Hmmm not seeing the humor in that one, Tipsy...but no matter.

Ditto what everyone else said...get to Meetings, drunk or sober! I'm curious too however, to know who told ya to keep drinking?

I was only half kidding...quite honestly I do find some meetings a little tough to get through. I understand that telling your story is part of the program but some people feel the need to tell it from the moment they were conceived until just before they stepped up to the podium.

It bores the everlovinshit out of me and when I get bored I feel like drinking.

Maybe AA should consider putting a gong in it's meeting rooms! That way when someone starts to ramble on and on one of us can whack it and a big cane will come out and yank them away

I've been to meetings where they set a timer to prevent folks from rambling on too long. Meeting format can be address at the bussiness meeting. When my eyes glaze over cause somebody talking but not saying anything it time for coffee or to take a shit.

I think we've all been to those "drunk-a-log" leads that make us want to bang our heads on the table (or grab a coffee and take a shit. )  However even those leads can be valuable to somebody at the meeting.  Maybe somebody there has shared the exact same experience and a thought runs through their head like, "Whoa.  I did that too.  I wonder...maybe I'm an alcoholic too?"

I lose my attention during rambling leads sometimes too.  But I usually refocus in time to hear something important.  So all is not lost.

Anyway, I brought my husband's cousin drunk to a meeting one time.  The next time he wanted to go, he was sober and shaking like a leaf, but he still came back with me a few times.  He has since moved across the country and I am not sure how he is.  Anyway, nobody in my home group criticized me or him, even when he reeked of booze.  We are honestly just glad to see you in the room, period.  Really.

right, hiya all,

sorry for not getting back sooner but had real trouble getting on this site.

first off let me just say i didn't go 'drunk', i had 4 pints before going, started at 12 noon and the meeting was at 7.45, so was nowhere drunk, and in answer to the question who said i have to keep drinking is all the doctors have said i can't stop just like that, the withdrawals could kill me, so thats why i posed the question in the first place, wasn't trying to be funny ect, which i think one or two of you may have thought.

end of the day i'm doing all i can to help myself and i haven't read all the replys and to be honest don't think i'm gonna bother, what was said in one offended me,

i said at the off i wasn't trying to come across as mocking the situation and i'm not, but i've been mocked in doing so, so post what ya like, don't care i came here for my own good not for you to get your gollies.

am i taking it to heart?, maybe so, but i'm entitled to do so.

thanks kate
