Guess the last time I posted, well, had a very rough spot.  Thought my husband was drinking again.  (?)  After much worry, and a session w/my counselor--we talked about energy drinks.   She said "do you think that maybe he was that way from the energy drinks?"

Well, it did give me some food for thought.  But I wasn't going to let him off the hook entirely either.  Anyway, we sat down to dinner one evening and my hubby brought a energy drink to the table.  (ADHD runs in the family, so of course, excess sugar and caffeine is the opposite way to go!)

I didn't tell him what to do, but I did get a Pepsi out of fridge and said there was 27 g of sugar in it AND 54 grams of sugar in the Energy drink (energy drinks can have 2 servings in one can!)  and who knows how much caffeine.

Since then, I have NOT seen him with an energy drink....just the soda.  Things have been going much smoother.

I did communicate my feelings---cause gosh--he really did seem drunk one day last month and how it affected me, and in his flurry of activity---well, other stuff.   Anyway, he has been back to meetings, and reading literature.

Anyway, I thought I'd post in case this helps someone here.  We all need to read those labels!  And think about any underlying disorders we may have besides alcoholism running our lives.

Emergency rooms are seeing more and more reactions in youngsters who are drinking the energy drinks.  (Vault, SoBe, Red Bull, etc.)    [Pretty scary when a 12 year olds heart is beating too fast at 1 a.m.!]

Hi Again Wallsa,

Have to tell you about an experience once, many years ago, my sister was telling me about this new Healthy Powder you could buy, in a Health food store, that would give you natural energy, she loved the stuff.

So I bought these tiny little capsules, and some of the Powder in a Health Food Store, to try it out. The name of this Powder was Guarana.

Well it was a Saturday morning, children had gone off with their Dad for week-end, and I decided to dig in and get my house cleaned, I worked 5 days a week, and my children were very young, so my house left a lot to be desired by Saturday morning.
I did not drink at that time.

So I thought I would try this new "Herb" help me get into a steamroller frame of mind, with all this house work, laundry etc.

So, I made up a little capsule, the real small kind, and took this "Herb" with a cup of coffee.

The next 8 hours were spent, waiting for this new Herb to leave my body, I felt so much physical and mental stress , well I would compare it to say, 10 Cappachinnos, in 15 minutes, I was incapable of any house work, my mind was racing about 200 mph. and physically immobilized by this so called new "Herb." Felt exactly like I was in a Ferrari, driving 190mph WITH THE BRAKES ON. Haha.

I will NEVER forget the feeling. and now when I am shopping in any supermarket, and I see even the bottled water, cannot think of their names right now, but check them out in the stores. They all contain Guarana extract.

When you are in a Nautilus Gym, all the Sports Energy drinks, have this same product in them. I for the life of me cannot figure out how a health gym could be promoting this stuff.

I am always on the look-out for this so called "Herbal" powder, it was worse than any dexadrine product. That was my experience.

Wanted to share that experience of many years ago with you.

Hope you have a great day, and happy to see that this issue is getting resolved, I hope.

Take care,

Toni

That's interesting, Toni. About 10-12 years ago, a friend came over, just gushing over a product called EOLA.(aloe backwards). " All Natural" herbs. You'd put these drops in juice or water. Called for 3 drops of each, so I'd use 1, given my sensitivity to things. Holy Shmoley, Balony. Did them for 3 or 4 weeks. Yeah, my energy sure returned. I was building cabinets with a friend at the time, and I tell ya, I'd go to work, he was having a rough time with stuff, and my mouth would open and I'd be giving him advise like I had good sense. Couldnt shut my mouth, couldnt force food down, could barely sleep. But I built more cabinets than a tv show. Did I connect it with this product? Hell no, it was "natural". Long story short, dropped 30 pounds, like twice more than I wanted, started feeling depressed, didn't recognise it, so thought Wow, menopause early. Got even more depressed, then I'd go hyper and thought crap, now I'm bi-polar. Still, didn't clue into the drops. Got so confused, ended up at the hospital, in ICU with arrythmia real bad. Did a blood panel, and my thyroid, which had never ever been an issue before, and stopped working completely. Brain chems all off. Within 48 hours, I was myself again. In two weeks, my blood work was normal. That crap had leached all the iodine out of my thyroid. Because of the hospitalization, the FDA was called in. My "herbs" were ma huang,  ephedrine, caffiene by mega doses, and theophylin, a blood thinner, vaso-dialator. I'm lucky I didn't hemorage. It was soooooo weird. and not one time did I blame those herbs. I will get HUGE and LAZY to the core, before I ever take another energy/herbal concoction. Hellofitis, the Chinese have used Ma Huang for centuries, for breathing problems, and no issues. The USA? Finds out it has the side effect of weight loss, market it in unreal concentrated strengths, and make a fortune from we who are either unhappy with our self image, or feel we don't move fast enough to keep up with our life styles. That was my $4,000.00 lesson AFTER insurance paid for it. The lesson being--take no herbs until you've researched the hell out of them. And talked to a herbalist or naturopath....
