Blame Mom: Bizarre Cause of Alcoholism

Women who breastfeed their infants for just a month or less could be placing them at a far higher risk of becoming alcoholics as adults. That's the startling word from new research conducted at Copenhagen University in Denmark, which concluded that early weaning is one factor that predisposes adults to alcohol abuse and hospitalization for an alcohol-related diagnosis, reports Reuters Health.

Have a sweet tooth? Find out the strange link between a love for sweets and alcoholism.

Using data from the Copenhagen Perinatal Cohort of 3,245 men and 3,317 women who were born between 1959 and 1961, the international research team led by Dr. Holger J. Sorenson found that 34 percent had been breastfed for no more than one month. During a follow-up in 1999, the researchers found that 98 men and 40 women from the total group of more than 6,500 had been hospitalized with an alcohol-related diagnosis. Of these 138 cases, 63 were weaned by one month and 75 were breast-fed for longer periods. From these numbers, the researchers calculated that early weaning increased the likelihood of alcoholism by 65 percent.

Did you know that what you drink affects how you look? Find out the specific impact of wine, beer, and spirits.

Other factors that were linked to an increased risk of alcoholism were:
--Male gender
--Maternal prenatal smoking
--Unwanted pregnancy at the time of conception
--Maternal psychiatric hospitalization for alcohol abuse
--Maternal psychiatric hospitalization with other diagnoses
--Low parental social status when the child was 1 year old
But even after taking into account all of these factors, there was still an increased likelihood of alcohol abuse associated with early weaning.

You may not believe how many U.S. adults admit to drinking alcohol regularly.

Why? Sorenson has two theories. One, decreased physical and psychological contact between the mother and the infant may increase the risk of alcoholism. In addition, a decreased intake of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids contained in breast milk could affect brain development, reports Reuters Health.

~~ The study findings were published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

I wasnt breast fed..  Dont know why... I think there was a reason but i dont know what it was..

I dont eat many sweats.. im far more of a savoury person

I once read that people who have exercised alot may end up becoming alcoholics.. well that was what the tittle said but it was just saying that the feelings from heavy exercise were similar to drinking.. the opiates released etc...  If i had the energy id be out there exercising more.. doh!

WOW, doll,  i scored a zero on the  "what u need to be on the good side"   LOL........that is so interesting.........even tho i think if a child is loved,  and there is NO  fetal alcohol syndrome in baby,   in other words, mom was clean,  good mother, etc,   i think ,  and this is just my take,  but i think it is the baby's  core beliefs in him/herself that predisposes them to alcohol abuse.....

i don't think i got the physical addiction of it,  but i DEFINITELY got the mental/emotional addiction to it.......so i need to do CORE work, in order to NOT want to drink to numb my pain.........

just my esh,  take what works, leave the rest.........

thanks/ rosie
