Afternoon??? It's 7 in the morning here!!! I don't really know that much about soul and funk. I like James Brown though. I'm sure you have heard his stuff. I think it's great that you are buying music. I know for me all the music that I listen too actually makes me feel good inside. I've kind of gone overboard. I have about 20 gigs of music on my pc, my whole cd collection plus a ton of downloads.

Hope you have a great day Rob! This is definitely the good life, being sober and all. Take care.

I used to have a large collection of 45's and lp's, and started to put stuff on my pc. Music helps me to express myself, as well as that good music is beautiful, and soothing music is soothing when I need it, and inspirational music inspires me. the down side of it was that some music actually got me high, like a dry drunk.  I came back into recovery when I was playing and singing, "Drift Away", and realized that that is what I was doing. I have been in choirs and play a bit of keyboard, and used to play guitar,,,  so I am not off of music,,, but am more careful about what I play,,, that it be stuff that is going to be good for me. In fact,,, lately I've been listening to more classical music.

Here is the definition of 'soul music': Soul music is a combination of rhythm and blues and gospel which began in the late 1950s in the United States. Rhythm and blues (a term coined by music writer and record producer Jerry Wexler) is itself a combination of blues and jazz, and arose in the 1940s as small groups, often playing saxophones, built upon the blues tradition. Soul music is differentiated by its use of gospel-music devices, its greater emphasis on vocalists, and its merging of religious and secular themes.

Here is a link to a page about soul music that gives some examples of artists, like Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, and Jackie Wilson,:
