New Med. has dehydrated Alcohol HELP
Permalink

Hi everyone,

I have taken an aerosol Inhaler for 7 years for Pulmanary Problems. The Drug is Called Atrovent. Iwas told that formula was changing, taking out the Flouro  carbides as a propellant.  When I first used the new drug it has a taste of Alcohol  to it. - Scared the S--t! out of me, when I read the new ingredient, it was replaced with "dehydrated alcohol" that even scared me more, After reading the Contraindication(Those Sheets that come with meds, with that fine print, I could not find anything Stating "not to be used by Recovery Alcoholics, you know there are over 1 millin of us, and thought that is should listed as a WARNING). Called my Phamacist, she said in that fine print that "Alcohol should be limited, while useing this medication"  Does anyone on this site, any nurse, or someone that works in a Pharmacy, know what "dehydrated alcohol" is.  I will see if I can change to another one (Inhaler)  next week, but in the meantime, I don't want to be freaked out by this over the week end.

I cannot speak to my doctor until Monday, and must use the medication four times a day. i do not have the luxury of just not using it until Monday.

So if anyone knows anything about "dehydrated Alcohol", will you respond.

I think the fear around this has me in a little spin out over worry.

God Bless

Toni

It is now 4 hours since I made this post and resolved the problem,  I did Google The DeHyd. Alc. and saw that is was dehydrated 200 Proof Alcohol, EEEEEK!!!!!!!!!!

So I insisted on speaking with my doc.  and when she called me from her house, and when we discussed the above, she told me not to use, any more, and to come in Monday and she would give me a new Rx for a different med. Soo Relieved.

She did say that all Carbon Florides were being removed from many, many drugs, and probably being replace with similar stuff.  BIG PROBLEM, there are thousands of recovery Alcoholics that use such drugs, that cannot be putting even minute amounts of 200 Grain Dehydrated Alcohol in their bodies. In my opinion these new formularies in these drugs NEED To have a Warning.  The med. I take has a Warning: Do Not Use, if you are allergic to Peanuts, or Peanut Products,   and should add "Do not use if you are Allergic to Alcohol" as well.  I think I need to get proactive on this.  Will keep you informed.   Thanks for your imput. Gamme.

If you have problems with your breathing over the weekend, I would suggest calling your Doctor ASAP.

Your Bro, Chris

wow,, yeah..  see, most things have alcohol diluted with a certain amount of water, or juice or whatever.. that makes the alcohol like 12%, or 2% or 30% or whatever...  if you takea the water out...  (that's what 'dehydrated' means) you get more pure alcohol.

hey..  I am very grateful that you are being pro-active about this.  first in spreading the word,, and then in getting people organized enough to demand that something be done as far as warnings and alternatives.

thanks

amanda

Hmm, well I am not a doctor-

But I had asthma as a child, and you probably know steam helps- boiling a pot of water and breathing steam can open your airways- And it was just kind of relaxing- Not sure if this is asthma you have, but either way, good luck-

I remember once accidentally buying a marinara sauce with wine, and that kinda bugged me out- Some recovering alcoholics dont mind that sort of thing, but I could taste the wine- not cool- even if 99% of it cooked off!

Glad you were able to find out what you needed to know Toni, we have to be our own watchdogs and our own advocates. I would have helped in the research but I was on my way out the door to go to a meeting.I have asthma but I am able to take a tablet and use a diskus....for now. Don't hesitate to get help if you have a bad attack, are you on a nebulizer? Take care.

Toni, honey, don't stop using your med. Just keep doing what you're doing till you get your doctor on Monday. It's not like you're "downing a bottle of booze" OK?!

Love you

Doll

Hi Doll,

In a conversation with my Pulmanary Doctor yesterday, she told me not to use, this weekend, until she met with me on Monday to try an alternative med, and look into subject.  One of our members sent me a website: http://www.health.gov.il/units/pharmacy/trufot/alonim/542.pdf#search='absolute and atrovent'

She also gave me a way to use a different med. that I have on hand to compensate for the absence of the above mentioned med. that would be safe for a  couple of days.  She is very bright, and I trust her.  She works with a group of Senior Specialist in the field, with UCSF backgrounds and affiliations.

I will keep everyone informed, when I do my own research too.

This MIP Forum is So Awesome.  Thank you all.

P.S. Speaking just for myself I cannot inhale a drug that has an after taste of Ethynol. Just as the first time I inhaled this drug, A Great Big Red Light was Flashing in my head! and would never be able to use on a daily basis, without that Red light Flashing at that after taste. In the same way that I always have my antennas out, would never eat a piece of rum soaked dessert, it is my body and, and always remember daily that I do not drink, but I am still a drunk that does not drink, and only by the Grace of God.  Harsh word to some (drunk), I guess, but sometimes, just for me, Alcoholic is too light weight a word. I call myself an Alcoholic, which I am, but in my thoughts, I have to remember, that when I say Alcoholic, I mean a drunk that does not drink, one day at a time.

It is my memory of coming into to this program and the condition I was in, makes me always keep it in clear sight. I do not drink, no matter what, and this is just one of those - Whats.

A big hug to all, and thank so much for your reponses.

Toni
