Hi Kay, and welcome.

Only you can answer those questions.  My opinion, since you're here, asking, something about your drinking behavior is troubling you.

I began drinking at age 15, same as you at parties and with friends. It was the "the thing to do" when I was a teen.  I found myself 20+ years later discovering that I am an alcoholic. Alcoholism is  progessive.

If  someone thinks they may have a problem, they  usually do. My suggestion, call your local Alcoholics Anonymous and talk with someone.

Kay, Welcome to the board. I'm glad you are asking the questions. As Doll said only you can figure out if you are an alcoholic, I started drinking at 12 yrs old, and I know I was an alcoholic by 20, but drank until I was 30, wish I would have stopped sooner.

You can go to the MIP home page and click on Alcoholics Anonymous WSO, there are some things you can read there. This is one of them.... (((Hugs))) GammyRose

How to tell when drinking is becoming a problem

ALCOHOLISM Alcoholism is a rough word to deal with. Yet nobody is too young (or too old) to have trouble with booze.

That's because alcoholism is an illness. It can hit anyone. Young, old. Rich, poor. Black, white.

And it doesn't matter how long you've been drinking or what you've been drinking. It's what drinking does to you that counts.

To help you decide whether you might have a problem with your own drinking, we've prepared these 12 questions. The answers are nobody's business but your own.

If you can answer yes to any one of these questions, maybe it's time you took a serious look at what your drinking might be doing to you.

And, if you do need help or if you'd just like to talk to someone about your drinking, call us. We're in the phone book under Alcoholics Anonymous.

A Simple 12-Question Quiz designed To Help You Decide

1 Do you drink because you have problems? To relax?
2 Do you drink when you get mad at other people, your friends or parents?
3 Do you prefer to drink alone, rather than with others?
4 Are your grades starting to slip? Are you goofing off on your job?
5 Did you ever try to stop drinking or drink less — and fail?
6 Have you begun to drink in the morning, before school or work?
7 Do you gulp your drinks?
8 Do you ever have loss of memory due to your drinking?
9 Do you lie about your drinking?
10 Do you ever get into trouble when you're drinking?
11 Do you get drunk when you drink, even when you don't mean to?
12 Do you think it's cool to be able to hold your liquor?

Hi Kay and welcome.

I asked this question to someone at the end of the AA helpline (UK). His reply was that if you need to ask, you probably are an alcoholic. I was asking when I was drinking a bottle of whisky a day and I still could'nt see it.

You are asking the question soon enough that you won't have to go through a detox and your liver is probably still ok. Your life hasn't been ruined YET. Why wait to controll your drinking, hospital food is ok but it's not great and personally I don't like having to walk round pushing a an IV drip.

The posts from Gammy and Doll should help you to make the decision yourself.

Best wishes

Chris.

hi kay,  my folks taught me how to drink when i was 13....i found out REAL quick what a good **escape* tool it was...next thing you know....when life would  **hammer me*  i wold drink to calm down and go to sleep.....oh i lied to myself a lot...i used to say  "well its only beer/ wine...AND i only drink when life sucks"   but the thing is...i did it to run from my pain/ problems, etc...instead of facing my stuff and dealing with it

i am glad you are asking about this...usually when you suspect you have a problem you do....one wise soul here said it is "progressive"   it is!!!  it snuck up on me and **smacked me in the head*....glad you are here....i hope you can find someone you can talk wiht about it.....you CAN overcome!!!!!  IF you want to.........rosie

I WAS ABOUT 15 WHEN MYDAD WENT TO AA.  HE USE TO GET PHAMPLETS AND LEAVE THEM LAYIND AROUND. OF COURSE I LOOKED AT THEM AND SOME OF THE ?'S GAMMY WROTE WERE IN THERE.  GUESS WHAT I WAS ALKY AT ABOUT 16 AND WAS TO YOUNG TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.  ACTULLY I THOUGHT I COULD DO IT LATER AT ANYTIME. IT GETS HARDER AND HARDER TO STAY SOBER AS THE ADDICTION GROWS. I WAS SOBER 6 YEARS PICKED UP AND COULDN'T STOP FOR 7 MORE.  JUST SERIOUS SHIT TO THINK ABOUT. BY THE WAY MY DAD STAYED SOBER 33 YEARS AND DIED A NATURAL DEATH VERY PROUD OF HIS SOBERITY.
