Well, this time next year I will hopefully FINALLY be back in college! And.... enjoying the wonderful COLD weather in IOWA!! lol Yep, putting in my application to Iowa State and Iowa Lakes. Been looking into Iowa State for awhile - best Ag program in the US.....
Problem will be funding.... but.... ya know, I finally decided if I have to take out student loans then I will, it's worth it. I know when I got accepted in Nebraska, I had enough grants to cover tuition at the community college there (and it would cover Iowa Lakes if I start there), but was also approved for student loans with it, and Iowa State would be covered between the grants and loans I'd get approved for, and actually not having to have that much in loans really. Also, main reason for looking into Iowa Lakes too is the whole out of state tuition thing, community college out of state tuition isn't bad, so could start there till I have residency, then transfer. If I start down here then transfer up there, I'd have to take a break from school until I got residency there before starting at Iowa State....
So.... gonna apply, get all that taken care of.... if I get accepted I will need to move late Spring/early Summer to give me time to deal with Voc Rehab up there to get more funding.... I know when I dealt with them in Nebraska I went in a month before school was to start, and they were having to do a rush on processing my stuff, they said they recommend coming in 2-3 months ahead of time. Oh, and Iowa Lakes has a scholarship program for recovering alkies/addicts.... or they used to anyway, I need to look into that.
And because of finally making the decision on this... well, I was still going to get my chickens, but a friend pointed out it's stupid to put the money into building the coop if I will be moving next year, and he's right, so I canceled my order.
I've got a friend up there that lives about 2 hours from Iowa State, and about an hour from Iowa Lakes..... said there is a poultry farm near him that is always looking for help, but I'm not sure where it is in relation to where I'd be for school, but with all the hatcheries and poultry farms there, I'd easily find work somewhere so not too worried about that. And I'm betting the Ag department at the schools could help me find something.
Figure I'll go up there and visit and check things out, although that will have to wait until Spring unless I can fly up there... because I'm not making that drive in snow again lol
Look into grants and scolarships as well. There are a lot of small ones out there that never get found. Even a $500.00 grant is better than nothing. And you may be surprised how simple some are to get. It never hurts to ask.
Chickie little: Great news!!! Go for it, it is so worth it! Im guessing Ag is some sort of agricultural program(?) since your so into animals and such. One option might be finding a job that has tuition reimbursement for that sort of thing. I worked at a hospital and they paid for my RN schooling. I did take out one small loan for some extra cash at the time. Even if you just take a few courses at a time your still young enough! I didnt graduate until I was 40!!! So, best of luck to you!!!! Lani

Good luck with your dreams, Lisa. I hope this is the promises coming true for you. As the fellas are saying ~ Easy doing it, chica ;) You sound like you have it all in hand and are rooting out research for homework. I hope you get the best deal. I worked at Camp Sunnyside, Des Moines, Iowa back in 96 so have a little sentimental attachment to the place. I had a wonderful time though I hope you have a much richer experience than I did being a youngun alky at the time! I'm hoping to take babysteps into my chosen profession also with a basic course in Counselling come Jan 08 with a view to progression. Taken me a long time to get here too so I'm 'willing' all the best for you too :) Hope you enjoy immensely! Keep us posted, chica. Danielle x

Yeah, I'm gonna look into grants and scholarships, I know I qualify for pell grant, which will mostly cover Iowa Lakes tuition... I'd gotten approved for a Nebraska grant too when I was up there. And like I said Iowa Lakes used to have some kind of program for recovering alkies, which I gotta look into.
Lani, yes, Ag is short for Agriculture.... Iowa lakes has a good Ag program, but not in exactly what I want, but they have an Ag transfer program to transfer to Iowa State which is probably what I'd do, mostly taking general ed and just a couple of Ag classes... not sure about tuition reimbursement from the poultry farms and stuff... maybe with the hatcheries, I dunno, I will look into it though.
Danielle, that's great that you're getting in school too! Good luck :)
Yes Phil, I'm good at taking giant leaps, and haven't learned yet lol but at least trying to plan this one out better than I have most my giant leaps lol Should be able to fly up there during the winter actually, to check out the school and everything, and figured I could drive up in March or April to start the job hunting and finding a place to rent and all... cuz I'd be moving probably in May I think. lots of poultry farms there, and hatcheries... I'd love to get a job at a hatchery since that's what I'm wanting to do with my life... If you ever get into another relationship, shoot you? I'm not gonna ask you to do the same for me.... or I'd be dead already LOL
Pete, I have to laugh every time I see that Git'r Done pic lol I hear it a lot down here.... thinkin about getting me a camo cap that says Git'r Done on it.... just to fit in lol But you won't ever hear those words comin out of my mouth unless I'm joking about the rednecks down here lmao
