Hello.  My name is Karen and I am a 34 year old mother from Australia and I am an alcoholic.  In the past week my life has hit rock bottom.  My husband is sick of my lies and deceipt and has decided to leave.  Whilst I am devistated by his decision it has finally given me the strengh I need to make the changes I need to make.  I went to my first counselling session last night and tonight I am going to my first AA meeting.  I have bought the big book and am well into it.  I am scared about attending my first meeting but figure if it has worked for so many of you it can work for me.

Sober 2 days and counting!

Hi Karen,

Welcome to MIP. I'm Carol, an alcoholic in UK.

Well done on two days sober! That's terrific. Keep going one day at a time.

I'm so glad that you are going to an AA meeting tonight. You'll find that the meeting is full of really lovely people who so want to help you to succeed in putting the alcohol down. For me, AA really does help me to stay sober. I would be so lost without the fellowship. When members are sharing their experience, strength and hope with each other, try to listen to the similarities in them and in you. That really helps.

I'm glad that you have got a copy of Big Book. It's a terrific book and, no matter how often I read it, I always get more out of it. There is also a book called Living Sober which I found very useful in the early days of my sobriety.

Please keep posting and letting us know how things are going for you, won't you? Please know that you're not on your own. We're all here for you.

Take care,

Carol

Thankyou everyone for your well wishes.  I was very intimidated by going to my first meeting but it turned out to be a wonderful experience.  The topic was selfishness which couldn't have been more appropriate.

I actually got myself a copy of Living Sober at the meeting and stayed up until all hours reading it last night.

I'm off to another meeting this morning and am hoping I find the experience as enjoyable as I did last night.

Thanks.
Karen

Welcome to MIP, Karen, really good that you've joined us. I hope you catch what you need as you're going along in your first few days. Well done on your 2days. I hope today works out to be your 3rd. It seems you have a good amount of willingness to change a few things in your life & putting down the drink is the first key to the rest of it. You're doing great & sharing your experiences with us is fantastic too. I hope you keep coming back. We're rooting for you. Best of luck to you & your partner. I hope you continue to enjoy your meetings. Come back & tell us how it's going for you, won't you? Blesses with you, Danielle x
