A Humming Bird flew into the warehouse where I work yesterday. She (I think it was a she) flew up into the sky light of the 20 foot ceiling and couldn't figure out that this wasn't the way out. After a while I opened the roll up door all the way and pulled the truck out, hoping that she see the light and fly out. 2 hours later she was still there, but resting on the ledge quite often. I was starting to worry as humming bird require a lot of fuel especially when it cold, if she got locked in over night she'd starve or freeze. Years before the same thing happened at another place I worked. At that time I put a fishing net on the end of the long pole used to change lite bulbs and netted the little guy and took him outside where he flew away. This time I had no net or pole so I taped to pieces if wooden molding together and taped a plastic shopping bag on the end and gave it a go. Well I couldn't net him in the bag and she started to get tangled in the cobwebs and she finally landed exhausted on a shelf about 10 feet high. I got a ladder climbed it and caught her in a soft rag and took her outside to the field across form the warehouse. She was exhausted and covered with webs. I got all the cobwebs off her then went into the kitchen and found some apple juice. She drank some of the apple juice and then after about 5 minute she was starting to look better. Then all of a sudden she just blasted off and flew away. Hope she's okay.

Actually the male are feisty little devils. I had a feeder at the apartment I used live in and I'd watch them the Alpha male would guard it and if another male tried to use it the get into an aerial dog fight like to fighter jets. You could always tell the females, they're less colorful and they would come in low and slow sip some sugar water and leave the same way, while the males are very macho. Very entertaining, I'm going to set up a new feeder.

Hummers..trucks...'she' flying thru skylight...20 feet in air....fuel...
Oh. hummingbird. I worked too hard today.

Once they get a little used to you and the feeder, try standing right next to it, real still. They get brave. Works best if you have a pretty good crowd of them.
