LOL, okay Frenzle, I'll bite.

If I have to ask myself if I'm an alcoholic? Then I probably am.

If it's causing even the tiniest amts. of problems in my life? Then I probably am.

If I chose the problems rather than dropping the drink? I am.

Hi there Frenzie and welcome to the site.  Tim, alcoholic.

I will add to the above:

When you LOVE living life with the glow/buzz more than life without it.

When you hide bottles of hard liquor to add to either beer, wine, or any non-alcoholic beverage so that nobody will notice how much alcohol you are truly consuming.

When you awaken in the morning or during the night and the first thing you think about is getting enough alcohol in your blood to feel comfortable.

I'm sure others will have more...Tim

Yup, Phil, ain't that the truth. I woke up one New Years , and rolled over and I was looking at a young man about 7 years or more, younger than me. Married him over the Christmas holidays. I vaguely remembered going to get the license. He was, or had been, a neighbor. Sad thing was, this poor kid didn't drink. He thought I really wanted to be married. So of course we parted ways, and I stayed "married" to him for 8 years, I was so afraid I'd do something like that again. You should have heard the local judge cracking jokes when I finally did get the divorce....Oi vey.

Right off the top of my head........

Drinks till they pass out. Puts others in harms way to get more booze. Hides the amount they drink. Lies about how much they've had all ready. Sneaks to drink. Can only focus on the the next drink. Worries when the supply looks low. Hangs out in places and with people they wouldn't otherwise.  Wakes up in strange places with strange people.

Alcoholics are teachers, writers, homemakers, custodians, cab drivers, judges, rock stars, actors, lawyers, police officers, firefighters, professors, linguists, construction workers, carpenters, electricians, mommies, daddies...and most of the alcoholics I know don't drink!

A day at a time- anything is possible.

Any more questions?

The definition that worked for me: an alcoholic is someone who can not control either when they drink or how much they drink once they start.

"Some" of us glossed over that loss of control by claiming that we did not even WANT to try to control our drinking (yet), so as to not prove that we couldn't perhaps?

Of course, I also have numerous not-so-serious definitions as well, but this seemed like a serious inquiry so... (let me know if you want the joke answers)

One simple question answered honestly -

Has your drinking ever shed a tear? Drinking is meant to be fun and social, if your drinking causes pain to someone else - you have a problem.

FYI - my drinking filled buckets with tears.
