i don't know who on here does any service at a national level, but I really need to rant a bit.
I edit our local AA magazine and in order to do this service (which I love) I have to sit on the General Service Office committee. Part of this means a monthly meeting of everyone else who sits on the committee and we all sit around and go through business. Theoretically it should take one hour (we all submit reports beforehand). Last night it took THREE HOURS! Lots of blah blah waffle rubbish! What is it about committees that does this to people? I sit there getting more and more irritated and begin wondering why we need this when recovery begins with one alcoholic talking to another alcoholic. Why do we need committees and service boards and other time-wasting exercises when (in true committee style) nothing is ever done. Last night the finance guy was talking about setting donation targets for areas and groups!!!!! Targets? In AA? Literature profits? Blegh! Oh well, I get to do the service that I love, but man I could do without the puffed up ego stuff that goes on in a GSO meeting here in sunny South Africa.
Well...sometimes I sit at some of these things too...and my thoughts are the same as yours..lol
I do know that there must be traditions and an AA structure..or all the monkeys in the zoo would likely kill each other...:)
And yup...Some meetings that should take a hour or so...can last up to 8...
There are some...I beleive..that like to hear themselves talk...fix things that dont need fixed...and well...its a big test of tolerance and patience...and love...In other words...Ide like to take a gun with a silencer on it..and just go..."Bang" ..one at a time...But we gotta love em hu? (cringe!!)...and Im not supposed to judge...(ouch)..well....lets call it a growing experience (smile)
Have a 2 day one...out of town..this Saturday and Sunday...sure as hell...keeps me sober for a couple more days...and (grateful)
The upside? We meet others from all over the globe..we get to give back...and we are a BIG part of...
You have a good day....
