Life without alcohol??

It was almost 2 weeks ago when I finally admitted to myself that I have a very serious drinking problem that will evolve and ruin my life if I don't do something drastic about it.  The first week was numbing and last weekend I stayed inside watching movies....afraid of venturing outside for I knew I would want to have a drink (to be social of course! ).

Anyhow, last night my neighbors a couple houses down had some of the close neighbors over for drinks.  I had known of this and had been invited to their house over a week before hand.  I knew everyone would be drinking but enjoy spending time with my neighbors, and I really wanted to go.  After all, I could not lock myself inside of the house forever!  I knew this may be treading on thin ice.  So, before attending, I went to an AA meeting.  Then, I went directly to the neighbor’s house.

I did not drink.  Oh, and I had a great time!!  Unbelievable!  I did not know I was able to have fun at social situations without a drink in my hand!  I would like to avoid hanging around people who are drinking; however, I am very proud of myself for doing so well.

I found a sponsor at the meeting I went to yesterday as well.  YAY!  She is great.  We took our dogs on a walk today and she told me what I need to do to start working my plan.

I did not honestly think that I would be able to enjoy my life without alcohol.  But now, my thoughts are beginning to change.  I know this will be a challenge, but I am looking forward to finding a new way of life!!!

Hi Jana,

Well it is so great to see you, and the changes you have made a commitment too.

Just wanted to say Hi.

Wow Jana!!!  Congratulations!!  I am so happy for you that you've found a sponsor/friend.  That will help tremendously if the going gets tough (and even if it doesn't).  Meanwhile, you'll have someone to help guide you through the steps and to be there with advice, maybe "advice" isn't the best word; perhaps "suggestions" would be better, on how to handle those "slippery slopes".   You have the attitude for success, and well you should after the troubles that drinking has caused in your life.  It's SO good to see that.  Good fortune to you!...Tim

What a wonderful thing, for you to have some willingness. It comes real hard for some of us. I hope you have a good experience with the 12 Steps and your sponsor. And Kudos!!

And one other thing, you are right, about 'dry people in dry places'... sometimes I am 'spiritually fit' to be around it, but sometimes I am not. So a good rule for me to follow is just simply that, "Dry People, in Dry Places". I never know when the urge will rear its ugly head!!

Hi Jana,

Congratulations on everything that you are doing! It was so good to read all that you are doing and your whole attitude to AA working the program is terrific. It took me a lot longer than you to really want it.

Well done, too, on handling the social occasion. I was about six weeks sober the first time I couldn't get out of an event. I dreaded it and worked myself into a dreadful state. But, I found that it was great and I really enjoyed myself. I remember being stunned at discovering that I could enjoy myself without a drink. I just didn't think it was possible.

Keep on doing all that you are doing. You're doing great.

Take care,

Carol

That's wonderful news!!!!  I haven't ventured out anywhere where there is drinking going on yet.  Not even to restraunts that serve it.  I'm timid about it.  Congrats and keep up the strong will!
