I had to throw this out here for all of you who might be interested.  I know that after "cleaning out" and even for a long time after, I get this craving for sweets from the lack of sugar that my over-worked liver is no longer producing from alcohol.  This sure beats candy in my opinion.  It's fruit salad.  It's refreshing, makes a great breakfast or an anytime sweet, healthy snack.  The Lady loves it and I've been making a large sald bowlful every 3-4 days, or as soon as one runs out.  Here's my recipe:

!/2 seedless watermelon.  Use a melon baller or 1tbsp. measuring spoon to make bite-sized pieces of it.  This is the base for the whole thing.

Green AND red seedless grapes- As many as you like but I use about 1C. of each and cut them in half 1) the become more bite-sized and 2) they impart thier flavor more.

Strawberries- also cut into bite-sized pieces for reasons above.

Blueberries- fresh or frozen.  I believe that now is the time of the year that Wa. state is harvesting their wonderful crop of this favorite fruit of mine.  But frozen will do.

Apple- I use one large Brayburn because it's not tart, doesn't seem to brown quickly, and stays crispy in the mix.  I quarter it, then core and cut into wedges, then cut the wedges into smaller bite-sized wedges.

Cantaloupe and Honeydew melons-  I use 1/4 to 1/2 of each, balled with melon baller.

That is a basic GOOD fruit salad.  I found some mangos at the market that were on sale and perfectly ripe, sweet as honey, and cut those up for it also.  The Lady likes nectarine in it, so I cut it up and in it goes.

You can add or delete anything you like/dislike.  Often when I eat this I think of just how fortunate we are to live where these bounties of summer are so readily available in any quantity.  If you have children, they will love you forever for making this.  I haven't found one who doesn't like it.  And yes, the balling of the melons, the dicing of the fruit, cutting the grapes in half takes time.  I spend about an hour to an hour and a half making a potful, but when you make something with love, you and others can taste that love in it.  So if you have that craving for sweets, this is a great trat to satisfy it.  I hope you enjoy...Tim

P.S.  What brought this up is that I just finished my last bowlful for breakafast and have to run to the market for new supplies.  I was visiting here while writing my list...thought I'd share it.

P.P.S.  Just got back from the market with supplies and while I was there I thought about a couple of serving tips I use.  One is, as Joni said below, keep it refrigerated and it's best if you chill it for a couple of hours before serving.  Second, I use a large kitchen spoon to dish it out but before doing that you'll find that a good amount of juices are melding together on the bottom so use the spoon to turn the whole thing over and get the fruit and juice from the bottom to the top and serve while it is freshly turned.

Thanks for the lovely recipe, Tim!!

I have been making home made salsas about every other week, and the fruit salad sounds like a good change of pace for me. I can envision it now, with little toothpicks sticking out of the pieces, in my fridge!!

Thanks!!

Joni

Hey Joni!  I sure would like to get that recipe for your salsa.  If you don't want to post it here you could send a PM.  Would be greatly appreciated...Tim

Phil, Diet ice cream?  What kind of Canadian import is this?  Actually I'm not a big ice cream fan but I appreciate the offer!!!  This salad is really only at its best while the harvest is on and it DOES satisfy the alkie craving for sugar with me without having to go to bon-bons and Twinkies...Tim

Hi Tim,

This made me think about what I have on hand, no mellons, but I am going to go to my kitchen and make the following, 2 cups green grapes, cut in half,  3 Granny Smith Green apples, peeled and cut small,  1 white peach (left), 2 ripe figs from my neighbors plant, 1 banana, squeeze 1/2 lemon to keep apples and bananas from discoloring, add 1 teaspoon Vanilla, and 1 teas. Brown Sugar, then add One cup Vanilla yogert, to make it something that will kind of stick together and hold the flavors together. Kind of a Mock Waldorf without the nuts.

Oops just forgot the main ingridient, have a package of fresh frozen Raspberries, putting the whole bag in salad, about 2 cups, now I have to go to the kitchen fast.

A far cry perhaps from you recipe with the mellon, but you Recipe just triggered a real craving for a fruit salad, without a trip to store.

Thanks for triggering a need for a real healthy salad.

Hope you have a great day.

And THANK YOU A THOUSAND TIMES FOR THE PICTURES OF MY LITTLE DOGGIE, I LOOK AT THEM ABOUT EVER HOUR!!!  WHAT A WONDERFUL SURPRISE THEY WERE.
