I combined them for years. Always liked a shot of Nyquil at the end of a night of drinking because it was the only thing that would knock my ass out. Without Nyquil I'd drink til the sun came up.
Come to find out they are a deadly combo. I'm sure my liver has suffered damage. I'm 36 and have done it since I was a teen.
Question: any old timers here have knowledge on this subject? A book to read, advice or knowledge on how to help the liver heal. Is there a liver cleanse???
If you are concerned about liver damage, a simple blood test through your Dr can give you the answers to that. The liver does regenerate.....but seeing as liver cells only live about 18 months at a time, it can take years while under strict circumstance (diet, mostly) to achieve a healthy liver. I've read loads and been told that Milk Thistle is a miracle for those of us recovering from Alcoholism. Visit a Health Food store or Naturopathic Doctor.
Here's a great excerpt on this topic from one of my favorite sites:
If, in the past, you have been a heavy drinker you would benefit from daily supplements of an incredible herb called milk thistle. Popular with European herbalists, this is one of the safest of all the herbal remedies and actually regenerates damaged liver cells.
The active ingredient is silymarin, which is extracted from the seeds. It works by altering the outer liver membrane cell structure so toxins cannot penetrate the organ. Better still, it stimulates the production of a chemical called RNA polymerase A, which boosts ribosome protein synthesis and regenerates the liver. The recommended dosage is 200-400mg of the active ingredient daily.
Yep! I consumed many, many acetomenaphin and/or ibuprofin for years for the day after hair hurting hangover! Then, one day, had to have emergency surgery and my liver enzymes were off the chart!
At 6 months sober, I had another test, back to normal. thank you HP. But my doc has advised to lay off the otc pain killers still...My suggestion, be wary of natural herbs too, since they're not FDA regulated, could be dangerous........get a test, see where you are, and talk to your physician.

The last liver test showed enzymes were 'a little high'. Each of the preceding ones for the last ten years were all normal.
All the alcoholic male relatives from both sides of the family smoke and drank into their 70's. Maybe I have good genes!
I have milk thistle; I just got slack in taking it daily.
The biggest thing I learned here today was that the liver does in fact heal/regenerate. I only thought that was the case once the bad part of the liver was cut out and allowed to re-grow.
God surely knew there'd be a bunch of drunks worried about their liver, so he made it healable just like most everything else 'in' us.
