Found this site while looking around for a site to help me on my drinking problem, A little back ground on me, 66 year old grandpa raising a 5 year old grand daughter and 6 year old grandson, so now you know why I am trying to quit, Smoked for 50+ years and quit with the help of a site called quitnet about 3 1//2 months ago so thought I would look for a site to help me quit drinking, Am a beer drinker, am able to function fine but know it isn't the best thing for my health, Maybe functioning fine is my take on the subject, I drink a couple of six packs a day, never get drunk but know that at times I do go to bed a little early as I get TIRED.
I live in a very small town but does have a once a week AA meeting so think that may be my next stop.
Hope that I can get a lot of support from this site as I am looking for all the help I can get.
Thanks for giving us some details, and a big congratulations on quitting smoking, such a big deal and you did it. I am saving that website, as one of those ones that has tried everything in the book, and I'll try anything, so thanks for sharing that.
I think that your plan of the next step being your local AA Meeting sounds so right on, they can help in so many ways, that we cannot. Real people, face to face, makes such a difference, I love this site, in the Support it offers, but nothing can replace the real thing, AA, offers a Plan of Action, we call them the tools, to kick this Disease. And one of the biggest tools is the Program of AA, itself. I think someone gave you a website, and that is a good place to start with the Reading, and getting an AA, Book, reading just the first 164 pages, helped me understand what I could not understand on my own, regarding this Disease.
Thanks for Posting tonight, really looking forward to sharing more with you, and so glad you found us here.
Welcome, again Perry, you are definitely in the Right Place.
Glad to see you posting again, Perry. Yeah, we have one meeting a week here, also. 3 men, 2 women. Idaho and WA arent' that different, are they?
Grandkids, they are a great motivator arent they? You find, having already raised your own kids, all this awareness about setting examples, etc.
Even that one meeting a week, it'll give you a chance to meet others, connect and find the similarities between you all. As Toni said, this board is great, but if you can hit that meeting, you'll get some solid stuff.
Stay cool, and keep coming back. Wren

Just wanted to say hi. Sounds like you have a good attitude towards quitting drinking. Aroud here we call it getting sober. All it takes is an open mind and the willingness to do the next right thing. By going to meetings and hearing the message and hopefully working the steps life becomes different and hopefully better!
What an honorable thing, you raising up those grandkids. My grandparents pretty much raised me from 4 years old when my mom was hit by a drunk driver... dad worked 16 hours a day so they were the 'parental examples' for me. I learned sooo much from them; loved them dearly and I do miss them so... they are gone on to 'greener pastures' now. it touches my heart that you are here and that you are sharing what's going on in your search for sobriety. I will definitely keep you and the little ones in my prayers.
Ditto on all the above replies; face-to-face meetings are the most important way to reach out... something majical happens when one alcoholic reaches out to help another...
Welcome and looking forward to making a new friend, Perry!!
Thanks for saying something about yourself. It's good to know you. Congratulations on stopping smoking. I have tried several times in the past, but so far I haven't succeeded. I know, though, that I will when the time is right.
All I can do here is to echo what has already been said to you. This board really is a wonderful place to be, but real AA meetings are very special, to me. I try to go to two or three each week as I know that they really are very important to me an to my sobriety. I live in a small village just outside a large city in the UK. I'm lucky in that I do have a choice of meetings that I can go to. Maybe, you could do some on-line meetings. I used those at first a lot when I stopped drinking.
I've bought copies of Big Book, Living Sober, 12x12 and Daily Reflections. When I can't get to a meeting I sit and read or check out the Internet. It all helps me.
I could associate with what you said about 'functioning' on the amount of alcohol that you drink. I thought that I was functioning, but looking back through sober eyes I now see that I wasn't. AA has turned my life around and I will always be grateful to the wonderful Fellowship.
Take care and keeping coming back here, won't you?
Carol
