My name is Star and I AM an alcoholic. I am 3 days sober and believe I am startingthe withdrawal/detox process.

Last night I went to my first AA meeting and I felt great. I got the BB met alot of friendly recov. women, got a list of #'s and probably a sponsor. It almost felt like it was going to be easy to do.

Tonight I have had to call 2 of those numbers already. I have a headache, am shaking, nervous and getting chills. Worst of all, I really wanted to go to a meeting but my SO was off at a bar. Ironic, eh?

I guess I am going to start the 12 steps - I have admitted that I am powerless over alcohol, my life has become unmanageable. Now i need to put down what I feel I am powerless over, there are so many things. I guess I wont have a hard time getting a few.

I got to this board from a Stay at Home parenting message board. I posted my addiction and starting of sobriety on there and one of the kind women on there sent me here.

I look forward to getting as well as giving support to all of you.

Star

Welcome, Star!!

This is a great place for all of us... welcome to the fold!!!

Shakes and such will go away eventually.... as long as we don't pick back up, we don't ever have to repeat the detox!!

Got chocolate around? That helps when your tummy is feeling better...

Welcome Star.  If your going through withdrawl you might want a Doctor's help.  Great going on day number three and going to AA.  I'm impressed that your thinking of a sponcer already!

Hi Star,

Welcome to this Board, when I first saw your name I thought you were a woman that I met in the chat room the other day, but i looked and her name was Sherr.

If the shakeyness gets real bad, you could call your doctor.

Hugs Dear and Welcome, there are so many great people here, and some are very very early in Recovery too.

Hope you will stay right here and let us know how you are doing, and congratulations on 3 days!

Welcome again, Toni

Hi Star and welcome to the board.  What a great adventure you are starting, and I am so glad you are going to meetings.  They were my life line when I first got sober, can't begin to tell you how much AA means to me.  They helped me save my life.

The candy bars are a good idea, however in my experience, doughnuts work, brownies work, and one night at 11pm I bought a frozen Sara Lee coconut cake, took it home, and couldn't even wait for it to thaw to eat it.  FYI:  you can use a knife and a hammer to cut it frozen.  Works like a charm!

A nice hot shower, or if you have the time, a hot bath would feel good when you are shaky.  That, plus getting your sugar level up should help, if not, than I second what others have said, time to seek professional help.

There is a little book with a yellow cover, I think it is called Getting Sober, that is wonderful and full of practical hints to help us when we first get sober.

Taking the first step is a huge step, and the begining of a journey,  Welcome to the world of wonderfully supportive people and a fellowship that is priceless .  So glad you are here.

Hi Star,

Welcome to the MIP Forum.

Congratulations on 3 days sober. That's fantastic! Well done.

I'm sorry that you are having withdrawal symptoms, but they really will pass. I had everything that you are describing. I decided to look at it as my body adjusting to not have poisonous levels of alcohol in it. I had been drinking for so many years that there was bound to be some effect, but it was good when they stopped. Hang in there, they will pass quite soon.

I found that reading anything and everything connected with AA really helped me; I called people who had given me their 'phone numbers; I ate chocolate all of the time!!! But, the sugar in it helps to compensate for the lack of sugar that our bodies were used to getting in the alcohol.

I don't drive (lost my driving licence), but I can always 'phone someone and get a lift to a meeting. I love my meetings and I can genuinely say that everybody I meet there is my friend. Meetings aren't enough for me and I am working the steps with the help of my sponsor. My life really is a million times better than it was when I was drinking. Yours will be, too.

Keep coming back to this wonderful Forum and read and post as much as you can. It really does help. Have a wonderful sobriety - you deserve it.

With very best wishes,

Carol

Hi Star and welcome. This has been a great place to come to during the day when I can't get to a meeting. Lot's of good sobriety here. If the withdrawal symptoms seem to get worse you might want to seek help from a phyichian. Look forward to getting to know ya. One day at a time!
