What should first-time PC builders actually check before buying a PSU?

I'm putting together my very first PC build and I'm feeling overwhelmed by all the PSU specs. Between 80 Plus ratings, modular cables, ATX form factors, and different protections, what are the most critical things a beginner needs to look out for to avoid buying something incompatible or unsafe?
