What legal recourse exists when companies threaten reviewers with fabricated cease-and-desist letters?

I received an intimidating letter from a law firm demanding I remove a negative review about a local service provider. The letter cited laws that don't exist and threatened court action within 48 hours. Has anyone else encountered this? Are these tactics legal, and what can ordinary consumers do when facing such pressure?

This is unfortunately common. Many small businesses hire aggressive reputation management firms that send template letters hoping to scare people into compliance. Most recipients don't verify the claims or consult lawyers. The truth is, sending baseless legal threats can itself violate consumer protection laws, but enforcement is rare unless you escalate formally.

Last year, a friend received three similar letters about a hotel review. She ignored them, but the company kept escalating. Eventually, she discovered fake legal documents while researching her rights. Turns out, the law firm was a shell company. She reported it to the legal ombudsman and posted her experience publicly. The threats stopped within a week. Sometimes calling out the bluff is the only effective response.
