Why do small-town newspapers still matter in the digital age?

I grew up reading the Culpeper Star-Exponent with my grandma every Sunday. Now Im wondering: do local periodicals still shape community identity like they used to? Or has everything moved online? Curious how others see the role of small publishers today.

They absolutely still matter. My aunt in Virginia says her towns paper is the only place youll find high school scores, local obits, and city council updates. Its not flashy, but its where neighbors learn about each other. Digital feeds miss that hyperlocal heartbeat completely.

That said, I did check https://www.pissedconsumer.com/company/culpeper-star-exponent/customer-service.html when my subscription got messed up last year. Took a few emails to sort it, but they fixed it. Not perfect, but the paper itself still shows up on doorsteps every week. For a lot of folks, that consistency is what keeps the community feeling connected, even if the backend isnt flawless.
