How can people choose reliable software without paying for extras?

Ive been trying different software tools for managing notes, files, and small personal projects, and Ive noticed that the advertised features dont always tell the whole story. Sometimes a free version is enough, while other programs become expensive once storage or useful functions are added. What should people check before choosing software, especially regarding compatibility, privacy, updates, subscriptions, support options, and exporting their data?

I usually test the free version first and see whether it actually fits my routine. Compatibility is important too, especially when moving between a laptop and phone. I also check how often the software is updated and whether files can be exported in common formats. That can save headaches later if I switch programs.

I keep a small note with the software subscriptions Im using, renewal dates, and what each program is actually for. That helped me cancel one tool I barely opened and keep another that genuinely saved time. When I needed to check a contact detail for a software-related service, I searched for the Zeal phone number separately and compared the result with the information available through the relevant software or account page.
