For some reason today, my old Sponsor, from many years ago, has been on my mind today, she was a very wise woman. She had about 20 Degrees from Stanford University, in the Field of Pychology, and way beyond that she had one of the Stongest Spiritual Programs of any that I have seen.
And when she would indulge me, which would only last for about 1 minute before she would apply some wisedom to the ramblings of this newcomer. Then refer only to the Step we were working on.
I have so many of her wise sayings stored in my head, but one of the most powerful was, about other people, and what they would say, or what they would do, in my opinion. "Other People Opinions of you are None of your Business". It had a brisling effect on me, way back when, but today I recall them as Comfort words. And so very wise, and full of TRUTH.
And today, with what I have read on this Board, and the Conflicts surfacing again between others, somehow has led me back to this statement. It can be reversed also, to "What your opinion is, is None of Anyone Business".
My Prayers go out to all the new People here, also any others that are reaching out, and my HOPE is that this MIP Board will give you the GIFT of HOPE that is offered in Alcoholics Anonymous and here on this Board, as well, That is what this Board is for, anyone coming in reaching out.
That is why I am here, only reason. I love this MIP Board and all that it represents to all of us, the Hope of this 24 hours, Just for Today. I have always felt that A.A. is honored as really a Sacred Place to go, when troubles arise, and on the good days as well. I see this Miracles in Progress Board in that same light.
The very first AA meeting I ever went to someone said "What others think of me is none of my business". At first I didn't get it, but with time and working the program I have understood it to be just as you stated. Opinions, experience, hope, whatever it may be that is within ME is just that ~ ME, no one else......... I do not think your referring to "conflicts again" was necessary, but hey! that's just me. .
I too have been told that!!! Also what is past the tip of my nose is not my concern, and when u assume u make an ass outa u and me, see assume ass u me!!! LOL And also my current spnsor tells me "just cuz I accept something dont mean I gotta like it." Ne way (((hugs)))) to everyone
I also heard a woman say that at a meeting once and it was like a lightbulb came on for me.....
I spent my whole life trying to please people and make people like me and none of it really mattered because what they thought of me was NONE OF MY BUSINESS! Wow, powerful and TRUE.
Good to remember when I am trying to make life suit me instead of letting life be what it is.....
Thanks for the words of wisdom Toni. I used to hate these damn sayings....probably because they applied to me and I didn't like it!!! Today things are different. Somebody would have to try real hard to offend me. My feelings sometimes get hurt but I think that's part of the growing process. No one is renting space in my head today and that's progress!!! I really love listening to people that have years of good sobriety. It does my soul good.
I think of you as a friend Toni. Tell your darn computer to behave!!! Have a great Tuesday!!!
Thanks Toni, I have not heard that before. I spend all my time worrying what everyone else thinks and trying to people please. Now I am trying to let go of all that and as long as I do the best I can and try to admit when I am wrong no one elses opinion really matters. You are so right it is none of my business! Thanks... Trudi
Doll quoted "What others think of me is none of my business"
I've also heard "What I think of others has the power to kill me" - i.e. Resentments.
