We all experience fear. Sometimes we fear small things that only seem large at the time, like a test in school or meeting a new boss or going to the dentist. Sometimes we fear big things like serious illness or death or that someone we love will come to harm. Fear is healthy & we all feel it. It keeps us from doing foolish things sometimes, but too much fear can also keep us from doing what we need for our growth.
If we have faith in a Higher Power & in ourselves, we can turn & face whatever frightens us, believing we can, with help, do what seems impossible. And we will & the fear will vanish. The important first step in dealing with fear is to take action—either by tackling what we fear ourselves or by asking for help. Each time we face our fear, we gain strength, courage & confidence in the doing.
The ability to accept responsibility is the measure of the man. — Roy L. Smith
When something new comes to be, we can be sure there was courage in the background, propelling it forward. Courage is the fuel of possibility that challenges the status quo.
Recovery is the creation of new realities. If fear & panic dominated our old attitude toward life, then courage – even if it is a tiny spark – is what enables us to act as if we are confident until we, in fact, become confident. If a sense of alienation & aloneness was our reality, it is courage that tugs us out of the corner & into the group, courage that opens our mouths to speak & courage that keeps us there until fellowship becomes more real than alienation ever was.
Today, I will move boldly toward my goals even though I do not feel a bit bold. Fear will not hold me back today.
What am I most afraid of?
