Bad night

Hi all, I'm fully aware that this post is totally irrelevent, I may not even post it. Just venting. I got called out to collect a deceased at 01:06 this morning. No problem, easy job, small person, no stairs.

Driving through a rural village a badger ran out in front of my ambulance. Swerved to avoid it, and the badger swerved to aviod me. Result: 1 badger with a splattered arse. Still alive. Called the police, not interested...... 24hr vet, not interested.

So I'm sat in an ambulance with the area manager next to me (he's on call with me this week) and a deceased in the back, told him that if we couldn't get the police or a vet I'd have to do the job....... 4 passes later, job done, me shaking, and feeling sick.

I Want a drink now, but I've got nothing in, thankfully.

If there is anything good about this, it re-inforces my view that NO alcohol should be kept in my house. My wife drinks (socially, she's not got a problem thankfully!) So she only buys small (2 glass) bottles of wine.

Ah well, S**t happens. As long as small furry animals exist there will be accidents on the road.

Bye for now

Chris.

awww, Chris, how awful!  You felt compassion, and wanted to do something out of compassion and it went so badly. but it's over now.  Boy, I admire you for such effort. I'm glad you thought to share this with us to help work it through.

Are you an emt and work for this ambulance company? That is a hard job. I used to work in an emergency room.

God bless you,

amanda

Hi Chris

Terrible experience, you were powerless over what happened.  Sorry, you had to go through that.

But you did the job to completion, so try to feel o.k., most people would not have been in the position you are in jobwise.

Hope tomorrow morning brings some relief.

I hit and killed a baby deer, many years ago, on a busy very rainey night with very little visability, same thing, he veered, I tried not to hit him, but he ran right into the front of my car, and then fell on the ground in front of my car.  Same story, police, too busy, humane society, no action, so all I could do was, with another fellow driver was pull him over to the side of the road. I do remember how it shook me up, to know that I had just done that, but on that dark rainey night I was on my way to a meeting, and did that help.

Felt so bad for the poor little deer, went back in morning, the deer had been taken away.

So sorry you had to go through that.

A Big  Soothing Hug to you Dearie,

Love, Toni

Chris,

It does seem sometimes we get more pain for our efforts to be kind.  I remember my brother once seeing two rabbits trying to cross a road and swerving to avoid them-he ended up hitting both, not just one.  And I was in the car once when my mom swerved slightly  to avoid a squirrel, but hit a dog that had been chasing it and killed the dog.  Some woman who saw what happened ran us down (it was residential area and she was on the sidewalk) and called my mom heartless-well, neither my mom or I saw the dog, we just felt a bump when she hit it. And my mom loves ALL animals, so to have someone think she was a cruel, heartless jerk who hit a dog on purpose and then left the scene, well, that hurt!

Your job must be hard enough to deal with, so I can only imagine some of how you felt hitting the badger and not even killing it. But I guess I'll go back to one of my favorite sayings from a film I saw in rehab-if we didn't want to have feelings, we should have been born rocks and not humans! I'm glad you care, even about a badger! It just proves you are human, and a decent one worthy of others caring about.  Hope tomorrow (or is it today?) brings better things!

I try my best not to hit any animal,  sometimes it just has to happen.

DRINKING WON'T BRING IT BACK OR CHANGE YOUR FEELINGS, EXCEPT FOR A SHORT TIME

THE DAMN ISM'S   SAY TAKE A DRINK IT'LL BE OK.

Good morning Chris,

Bad Night,  Better Morning I hope.

Hope you are feeling better.  Just wanted to tell you that I saw a program on Sixty Minutes or one similar to it, on the number of Human Lives that are lost in collision with animals, the number were alarming! And some lifetime injuries too.

Second, I wanted to say, even though I will cook with Marsela wine, very seldom, but I never allow any Alcohol to stay in House. I do not trust the Disease of Alcohol. It is my enemy, and I personally have to be vigilant with protecting myself.    I think it was in a Post from Rick yesterday, part of it talked about the Compulsion being STRONGER than we ARE.

Boy, could I relate to that.

Just some early morning thoughts, and thinking about how we can find something good in all adversity,  The Badger was hurt, not you, and that ALONE is a Blessing.

Love from across the Sea, Toni

Poor badger- I think, Chris, all the suffering we have gone through as alcoholics often makes us paricularly sensitive to the pain of others-

I for one became a vegetarian. I don't say that to brag or be self-righteous, I used to be pretty pro-carnivore myself, but the treatment of billions of animals on modern factory farms is nothing like historical farming and hunting practices, and I think we have alternatives like the humane free-range/organic methods popular in Europe.

In any case, I congrats on not drinking and being compassionate-

-Joel

Thank you all.

At least now I feel a bit better about it. Some things just happen, and sometimes we have to do unpleasant things as a result.

Again, thank you, your response to this post has really helped.

Bye for now

Chris.
