In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. --Anne Frank
In the face of being hunted for extermination, Anne Frank could write this from her hiding place in an attic. Was she naive? No. She deeply believed in the goodness of creation and the goodness of all creatures, including those who persecuted and murdered her people.
Somehow, young as she was, Anne Frank knew a truth we sometimes lose: that it is not what people do that makes them good or evil. It is who they are. And for Anne Frank, all people are made in the image of God--and therefore, deep down at their core, must be good. She was able to see through the brutality and hatred to that true creation of God.
We are left in awe at such faith and love. But we can draw from it too, and when our brother or sister or parent or child does something to hurt us, we can remember Anne Frank's ability to see what is good. We can look beneath the hurtful actions and forgive.
You have hit the topic on the head. Two years ago I found myself in a situation where I was blindsided in a personal/business deal. I know, I know, never do business with friends, but you see they weren't friends when I first decided to do business. Details are trivial but the long and short of it is I got burnt, hurt and kicked when I WAS DOWN. OK ....take your time, go through the steps and it will disappear. Well it hasn't. I now realize that its been 2 years and I've never been the same. It happened on the day I went to a recovery centre and the same day put my 14 year old Alaskan Malamute to sleep. He was my best friend. It consumed my thoughts while at the centre and dampened my efforts affecting the outcome of the program. I have tried to deal with it by being honest. Wow did that bloow up in my face. I have prayed and prayed for these people and yet after two years the crap still lies at the bottom of my gut like a ton of bricks. It also makes me realize just how ill I really am. One day at a time........................sue
