Thats what I spend on beer and smokes. Sheese what a waste!!! Add it up over the years and my worst hangover doesnt compare to the wasted feeling I get thinking about all that squandered money. This time next year Im going to have $ 3000.00 I didnt spend!!!! Thinking I want to go to a AA meeting first thing for new year. Sitting around by myself being reclusive doesnt bode well. Im such a chicken though when it comes time to get in the car present myself at a meeting. If there is a meeting tomorrow nearby Im going to go.
Some people go to their first meeting, and just kind of sit quietly to the side. Nothing wrong with just putting your toes in at first. I'm glad you're still here,, and glad to hear that you are looking for a good meeting. Toothpick's experience in looking for a good group is kind of typical.

Glad to see your on the board. if you get one year, one day at a time, there's a Guarantee that you will have a lot more than $3000.00. You get your health back, you get the Trust of you Loved Ones(Family) back, you get new friends that are some of best people you will ever meet.
So, here's hopeing you find a meeting. Christmas and New's Years Eve, AA has Alcothons in every city. An Alcothon is where there usually have a meeting every hour, with a good speaker plus some really good food. A lot of festivities, and good people to meet.
The holday's are pretty rough for new people and rough for a lot of people that have some time in this program.
You could call around, and see if there are any Alano Clubs in your area, they are in almost all cities, and where there is no Alano Club, groups hold Alcothons in Churches and Halls. There are usually some new people, and not so new people gathered to have a good Holiday.
So if you have found the AA Schedule for your area, if you go to a meeting you can ask if there
Any Alcothons going on. (That's if it sounds like something you might want to attend.)
Some people go to their first meeting, and just kind of sit quietly to the side. No
Im reclusive and introverted now. The other side is I mix well with anyone if I want too. I really did pledge a college level fraternity and was accepted. Should I just go in there and talk it up a lot or be a shrinking violet? Are they going to ask if I have any family? Are they going to ask if I am a veteran? Are people going to bend my ear about thier families. These hillbillies want to know everything about you. Ill tell them Im a vietnam veteran, if asked, but Im going to ask some questions too. Spare me theres always a gossip in the crowd. Going anyway TOMORROW earlier the better. Happy new Year
What if someone asks me about non alcoholic personal life? I dont have a record but there are always the people that want to snoop. Dont know what they would get out of it. Im very mundane, but when some one in the crowd asks about my job, family, it sounds like a sales pitch and thats not what Im there for. Im hoping AA is filtering out the ones looking to make money out of it. If I get a hint or sniff of money from me its quits on us! Going tomorrow regardless and I wont conclude on one meeting to be fair. Stay Tuned.
Everyone in AA has been to their very FIRST meeting. Don't worry! They won't bite! Talk if you want, don't if you don't want. It's ALL up to you. NO one will make you feel anything but welcomed. They'll probably give you a list of phone numbers of other AA's you can call and some literature on what to expect, what AA is about, etc.
Give a shot, what have you got to lose.
Hugs to ya!

There are all kinds of people in AA, so you might just meet up with almost any type of person who might say or ask almost any type of thing,,, including nice things. Going to a meeting does not mean that you have to submit to anything you are not comfortable with. If someone starts asking me a bunch of questions,,, there is no obligation to answer any of them. suggestion - just be yourself. Whether you want to be sociable, or not sociable, share certain info about yourself, and not other info (this is an anonymous program, remember... you are under no obligation to tell anyone anything about yourself), not even the 'my name is...' if you don't want to speak. We are allowed to establish healthy boundaries,, in fact we are encouraged to,,, and that goes both ways.. it's part of recovery.
Well,,, starting off the new year with a meeting is a great way to start it off. 'See' you later,

Jeff- it could add up to a lot more than 3K- your earning power might be much higher in AA. Sobriety and living by principles can make us top workers- Take Care and Happy New Year, JB
Thanks, Im on the wagon now, didnt go to the meeting Iwas so resolved to, always happens Im sober a few days catchin-up then drink till its necessary to attend to business. This place helps break the ice. Im always so defensive. Really have to go to my first meeting its just a matter of time before, with my drinking, something is going to blow! Liver, stroke ? Have to get out of isolating myself and socialize more.
