Sponsors?

Someone PLEASE direct me to the passages in The Big Book that speak to the topic of 'sponsorship'.

I would be most intrigued in hearing replies to the fact that AA Conferences have been addressing the problem of 'The Dangers of Sponsors' and why it seems to be gospel in AA that the newcomer has to "get a sponsor" "get a sponsor" "get a sponsor".

Rubbish. Most sponsors haven't a clue on the workings of the 12 and 12. Please 'sponsors', take your egos out of the program and remember that we are all responsible to carry the message. AA is not a private club where sponsorship is part of the rites of passsage for the new members introduction to the club or society. AA is a fellowship. It is a WE program.

Getting a sponsor is simply a suggestion ... most newcomers find it comforting to have one person they can call frequently to discuss their program progress with ... it is not mandatory ...

Do you go to meetings or are you just making up stuff to try and get under other people's skin ??? ... you should know this is how AA works ... again you post negativity here and I pray the newcomer that finds this as their first post to read will not be swayed by your coming down on AA ... I pray they will read more of the posts here to see what AA and recovery is really about ...

If you continue to post this 'rubbish' as you call it, I'm going to start believing this  is just a rant from a total m.ron ... someone who doesn't care to help, but to put others down ... maybe you could try to 'encourage' others rather than being 'judgemental and discouraging' ...you wrote:

Very supportive ... why not be a part of the solution rather than part of the problem ???

Not everything that is AA is encompassed in the Big Book. The Governing Body of AA is in New York not in the big book. AA is a fellowship of men and women...not a book. The big book is our most commonly used publication but there are also other AA approved pieces of literature. AA started as one alcoholic helping another. Hence, it does help still when it is boiled down to one person with more sobriety helping another person with less. I think that is the gist of sponsorship. If you truly believe sponsorship is useless, you have missed something very crucial about the program.

Here is a link about AA sponsorship. It is also a link to the pamphlet on sponsorship that is put out by AA general service (in short - that means AA!)

Are you a member of AA or a member of Big Book? One is much larger than the other (no disrespect to the BB which of course I love and do my best to follow).

Hi Charlz,

Welcome to the MIP board. Last time I checked, the only requirement for membership was the desire to stop drinking...everything else are only suggestions if we desire to "stay" sober.

If we have been in the program awhile, I believe it is the duty of us all to make the new person feel welcome and comfortable and offer help if desired.

P.S. Why are you asking us anyhow? We are not in the big book. The internet is not in the big book. It doesn't exist :)

Charlz, did you run out of other places to Rant? This board is a fellowship, much like a family. You're a lot like a evangelist that busted into our living room shouting from some twisted bible. If all you want to do is Rant, may I direct you to the appropriate board for that.   biggrin

I can't speak for other sponsors but I sponsor several people and I do have a clue on the workings of the 12 and 12. I learned it from my sponsor who also had a clue on the workings of the 12 and 12. Guess where he learned it, right from his sponsor. My ego doesn't come into play when working with others, my reward is seeing them get better. I remind them not to break their arm patting themselves on the back for doing what they should have been doing all along, living life on lifes terms and treating others with respect. You're right this is a we program none of us could have done it alone if we could have we wouldn't be here.
