I was a huge bourbon and coke drinker.  Now when I go to drink a glass of coke, I swear I can still taste the bourbon.  Mind tricks or do I need to get a new dishwasher?

you know, you may think this is funny, but it is a good way to get yourself removed from this site.

You former drinkers sure are up-tight.

I would say that that's typical stuff for a newcomer.  It's even possible for your brain to release endorphins  based on a sensory suggestion, very common for drug addicts,  it happened to me for a week or two after quiting coke.

I agree with Phil, that if you're sincerely trying to get sober, doing things that are associated with drinking should be avoided.  How much time sober do you have now?

Personally I drink a lot of milk these days, but occasionally have a Pepsi! :)

Welcome to MIP, Bud. I thought it was funny too. A trick of the mind & we are very conditionable so have to be careful what our influences are. You spoke in past tense. Does that mean you're making efforts to leave the old game behind & try for a new life? To Chest too.. I don't see myself as a former drinker though technically that could be said & part way true but that would be a euphemism for me. My name's Danielle & I'm an alcoholic. That means I can't take a drink 1, because I don't know when to stop & it incites an obsession in my mind & a craving in my body 2, I can't guarantee my behaviour after a drink ~ Instant idiot - just add alcohol 3, I only seem to want to drink when I'm deeply disturbed on some level & finding it hard to accept something whether that be people, places or things or some defect of mine I need to look at. We call this a spiritual malady. So this illnes is threefold ~ of the mind, body & soul. Also progressive, hence a disease. Have I said too much too soon? I'm sharing this for me. This is what I've learned & accepted since coming into A.A. & what keeps me sober today 1Day@aTime. I hope it may help you too if you want it to. Danielle x

Drink Coffee. The stuff at the meetings tastes the best. That cokes got corn syrup in it, carmel coloring and all sorts of bad stuff in it. I thought I might have an allergy to carmel coloring for a while and it unfortunately turned out to be the booze that was causing me trouble. Process of elimination. :)

On a more serious note, You might ditch the coke for real for a while. Anything that makes me think of a drink or makes me think I can drink something that smells like a drink could be dangerous. My nose didn't work right for several years. If your nose confuses coke and bourbon its in your mind but how do you know which is which for sure? Its to important to play around with in my opinion. I'll give you an example.

I was told when I go to a wedding to always sniff the punch. When I'm anywhere a drink might be served I "Sniff the punch." we can pick up the wrong drink by accident, someone can pour a shot in ours for "fun" or a punch that was safe in the beginning of the night gets spiked a little later.

I have to be able to trust my nose cause that can set me off enough. I don't want it hitting my lips. One day I might spit it out and the next, who knows.

If you can't trust your nose with coke anymore I would stay away from it so you don't get lax at some more critical time. Just my opinion, that how I made decisions. "How will this affect my sobriety. Will this decision put me closer to a drink or further from one? every decision should take me further from a drink instead of nearer.

Drink Coffee :)

For me I stay away from any thing related to alcohol. I do not even like getting within a hundred yards of the ABC store. :D Some Peeps sudjest drinking alcohol free beer, but I know that is a bad road to travel. Since they do have a little alcohol i n them. This alcoholic would drink as many as he could lookin for that buzz. Just stick to that good ole AA coffee for this alky.
