I am in excruciating pain.  I have a nevve disease called shingles and it is the most painful thing in the world.  I have made myself make meetings although misserable through them as all I want to do is ly down.  Because I am an addict it is very hard to get narcotic pain meds.  If every I needed them it is now.
But thank God a drink has not crossed my mind!!!  I know I will make it through this and I hate to complain.  I can use a lot of prayer please!!!!!
Post if you have experience in this.  Thanks for listening.

Hi Allison,

I am so truly sorry that you are in a lot of pain right now. Although I have never had shingles I know that it can be extremely painful, especially so depending where it is.

I have just read this about shingles and it might help you:-

'Acyclovir is an antiviral medication that may be prescribed to shorten the course, reduce pain, reduce complications, or protect an immunocompromised individual.'

It might be worth checking out with your GP.

Here is a url that tells a little more about it. I hope that it will help you.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000858.htm

Well done on not taking a drink. It just won't help you.

Please know that you're in my thoughts and prayers.

Take good care of yourself, won't you?

(((Hugs)))

Carol

Allison, of course I will pray for you and I will encourage the rest of my family to as well.  I too have been through so much pain and suffering. As a result of a car accident I was in back in 2005. I have not only been in severe and chronic pain but also I have not been able to work since February of this year.  If you read my thread about suffering through pain and anxiety you will get a much better picture of what I have been going through.

Thank GOD that we have a place to go or people that we can call for extra support. I would have been lost if not for the meetings my sponser has brought to my home or the friends I have made in AA to call.  I have been fortunate in my abilities to attend a few outside meetings, but I have not been able to make it through a full one yet.

I am also on a pain medication plan.  Right now I depend on the narcotics to help me deal with the pain, however I will in the near future tell my doctors that I would like to come off the meds and find other alternatives to deal with my pain issues.  Right now is just too soon, but its coming, I can feel it. They all know I am in recovery and they understand what it means to me.  Right now is just not the right time.

My medicine is being controlled by my wife of 29 years and she is also in recovery for alcoholism. She gives them to me AS prescribed and does not take any crud from me. Afterall, I get toxic when on these meds and my mind goes to scary places.  All the more reason to find other alternatives as quickly as I can.

I wish you a speedy recovery from your pain and the effects of shingles. I once had them on the left side of my face and it was truly painful and about drove me crazy.  We will all pray for you, my entire immediate family is in recovery from alcohol abuse. Afterall, we are just a bunch of Irish people with a bit of Indian blood, so giving us a drink is like giving a machine gun to a monkey...LOl! Thought you could use the levity!

GOD Bless you and get well soon!

Seems as if alcoholism and physical pain go hand in hand.....I, along with a few others here, suffer also.

I have degenerative disk disease. One by one having to have spinal disks fused. I'm up to 4 in a little over 3 years. :(

Never had shingles, but understand it to be VERY painful & just recently heard it's the same virus as chicken pox - I had those at the old age of 30 and it was devasting!!

I'm so glad you've gotten some relief from the Darvocet.

Prayers going up..........

I have not had shingles, but my dad did, and he said it was excruciating!

I have degenerative disc disease too, and am seeing a pain management specialist this coming Tuesday for more injections into my tailbone.

Chronic pain can definitely wear and tear on my mental state.

I've also found there are a lot of non-narcotic prescription pain relievers out there that have worked well for me. I had a toe amputated (brown recluse spider bite) a few years ago, and the surgeon prescribed a non-narcotic pain reliever for me. It worked very well.

I hope you are feeling better soon!

Wonderful support from all of you, thank you!!! Odly enough I too have degenerative disk disease. I thought that was pain, well the shingles have taught me that the pain from the disk disease is a laugh compared to this. There are lesssons in everything the key is to see them and remember them! This computer and internet were a gift from a friend in recovery and she saved my life! This internet has really made such a difference in my life!
Glad to know all of you!
Allison
