I am going on my 8th day sober today and recently I have just been starving all the time. hungry.gif No matter what I eat I don't feel full. I was wondering if this is a normal physical reaction or am I mentally comensating for the loss of alcohol intake? I was told about the craving of sugar, how alcohol turns to sugar and thought that could be part of it. But I'm going crazy insane being hungry all the time. Any input and/or advice to curve this hunger is hugely welcomed.

Deb

Alcoholic drinks are some of the highest caloric beverages you can consume. The alcohol itself also has an effect on your metabolism. I know I had issues with food when I stopped. I also think that I might have been seeking another type of "fix".

I still have a bit of a love affair with food, but have learned to keep it in balance with all the other senses. I will always love a good steak done right, or a little cheesecake with canned cherries on top, but only when I am hungry, and not when I am "empty".

Hi Deb

Well done on your 8th day. You're doing really well.

For me, when I was drinking, I just wasn't eating properly so when I put the bottle down I noticed an increase in my appetite. I decided not to worry about it for a little while as I needed to concentrate on not drinking. But, I tried to snack on fruit and raw vegetables as I knew that they would be healthy for me.

I can still be very tempted to eat all the wrong types of food, but now that I'm not drinking I want to look after myself and eat properly. You'll be fine.

Take care,

Carol

Metabolism shifts are a very normal part of drink cessation. In not drinking, we remove a huge source of empty calories from our diet. One of my early AA mentors, an MD, literally wrote me a prescription for one month: increased coloric intake, particulalry healthy sweets like fruit and juice, and all the chocolate I want. The key here is the "one month" part. My increased hunger did NOT tranlsate to weight gain, just near constant tummy growls.

Congrats on 8 days!!!!!!

Woo Hoo! congrats on 8 days..........awesome........if it's at all possible, please see a doctor and get a good 'once over' - tell him you've stopped drinking, etc.. just to be safe.....My sponsor recommended I do this, and I'm so glad I did, I discovered I had high blood pressure and am borderline diabetic.............((((Hugs))))

Hi Deb, and congrats on 8 days. I have no idea about the starving question. Doll's suggestion of seeing a doctor is a good one, though. I can't recall if I started eating a lot when I first got sober, but mostly because all of it is a blur! I had other issues, though, like memory problems, numbness in my arms, etc. All I can say is - if for now you are hungry all the time and eating a lot, it is most likely preferable to drinking yourself to death! smile.gif If you stay sober, you'll have plenty of opportunities to think about other things like how you are eating. It's funny that I'm reading your post now, because I'm pregnant and starving all the time, but I haven't been allowed to eat or drink anything for 12 hours because I'm about to take a glucose test. So just reading this post made ME really hungry! smile.gif Hang in there, and know you are not alone.

- Jen
