We've had quite a number of newcomers start threads in the last few days.  I'd like to here about it, and how you were able to get thru the day without drinking.
more later- pass

Find something else to occupy your mind - ex - children, family, hobbies, pray, read, pick up the phone, call other members and talk about anything and everything.
five minutes at a time.
Later - Jeannie

Too late. Big football match on yesterday here in ireland. Met my friends in the pub to watch it. First 2 drinks were non-al but then the other bastard in my brain took over and won out. 3 weeks. I'll have to come up with a better plan next time. I think my mistake was going out, but I hate to think that I will never be able to go out again. Please tell me it gets better.

Hello FP,

That's a classic, what we would call, slip. I had plenty of them in a two year period. It's going to be very difficult (if not impossible) to hang with your old buddies in a pub watching them drink for 3 hours during a football game and not picking up a drink yourself. You will however find people in AA you can hang out with and watch the game. We have to stay away from the "people, places, and things" that we associate with drinking for while (in some cases permanently). I'm not saying you can never go to a pub again but It should be avoided for a year or so while you get you sobriety on the right track. I know you're in a geographically challenging place but the AA program has proven itself affective around the world even in the remotest of regions.

I go to drinking establishments occasionally, for a good reason only, such as to see a Blues band play. And I take one of us with me for insurance. I don't go there with people who drink though. And I stayed away till I had about 5 years sobriety. Remember this program is 72 year old, and all of this has been done before 1000's of times. That's why it's best to ask a sponsor's advice before going off and doing something that'll get you drunk. You did the right thing telling one of us about it.

Keep coming back

Dean
