Maybe I need to let God restore me to sanity... lol
I'm up to 13 babies now! 6 turkeys, 3 guineas, brought one home from my friend's farm today... and now 4 chicks! went to the farm and home store to pick up a feeder for my guineas, since I was using a tupperware lid and it really wasn't big enough... well... they had bantam chicks marked down to $1... which if I'd waited a few more days they'd be 50 cents... but I'm too impulsive with animals... lol And in the bin right next to them, there were these *adorable* black and grey chicks... silver hazed pullets... well, they were only $2, so I got one... I know my friend won't buy them unless they're really marked down, but then she's buying on large scale.... I don't think spending $5 on 4 chicks is so bad...
Not sure what type of bantams they are... 2 are feather-footed. Was looking them up online, found a site that shows picks of bantam chicks, but still couldn't figure it out... when I get a pic of them I'll put it on the chicken forum I found and ask them though... yes, I now go to a turkey forum, guinea forum, and chicken forum... lol
Anyway, my roommate has the camera at our friend's house, cuz he wants pics of all the work he's doing over there... so I'll get pics whenever he decides to come home...
Oh, and I'm wondering if Jimmy the guinea might be a girl? out of my 3 guineas, he's considerably smaller, and I was pretty sure they all came from the same shipment, and even if they came from different shipments, he should be the biggest cuz he would've come before the others... so... I dunno if you can sex them this young based on size... but... I'm willing to bet I'll have to change his name lol
Are y'all sick of hearing about my babies yet? lol This is all just so exciting to me, and this is about the only forum I really post at anymore... lol working on putting together a website where I can put farm and critter pics...
With all the birds I'm getting, I'll have to start pitching in on the cost of feed...
Well... I need to get some ice on my back... and see if I can sleep... getting my MRI tomorrow evening... since I slept through my last appointment... lol
lol Phil, well, I had said 9 babies was enough... then went and bought 4 more... lol Yep, I tend to do things all or nothing quite a bit... it could be worse, I could've bought out the cheap chicks from the store like my friend did lol My roommate would've flipped out, I think they had maybe close to 100 of those bantams there marked down lol
We've gotta build a chicken coop soon... and when we do, I'm going to see if we can put on a room in it that would be ok for babies... so we can keep them out there rather than in this tiny room I've got them in in the house... I gotta clean out that room tonight, rearrange it, how I have it now, I can't move the heat lamp away from the cages very well, I've got it raised as high as it'll go with how I've got it rigged... and I need to be weaning the turkeys and guineas off of it, but the chicks need more heat since they're younger... ah well, I'll figure it out...
Was up all night again... fell asleep around 6, got up at 2... now I gotta rush and get ready to head into town...
Lisa, Your enthuiasm is infectious. Am happy that the chicks are keeping you centered. It is agreed it is probably time to get that coop built. Don't forget, your meetings and to work your 12 steps, as well. Hope the MRI can pinpoint your back problem. Will be thinking of you.
Oh god, they're addictive I guess... lol got home from my MRI tonight (I should have the results middle of next week) and my roommate and our friend had just gotten here... our friend got me to go into town with her to get some feeders and larger waterers for her chicks... they had pretty much all their poultry marked down... so she pretty much bought them out again, and since she buys in large quantities they marked them down even more...
Well, they had polish crested chicks in there which I wanted *so* bad, they're adorable! I figured I'd just get a couple of them, put them in with the chicks I got yesterday... well, she got them to mark down all the ones in that stock tank if she bought them all, she wanted one kind that was in there... I told her I'd steal a couple of the polish crested ones from her, well, she gave me all 18 of them! lmao
So I have 32 babies total now... lol She said I can give some of them back to her if I want, but I dunno I'll probably keep them all. Since I'm getting so many and she's been buying all this for me since she gets such good deals, I told her today when my check gets in the bank next month I'll pay her for it all, I'd already realized I'm gonna have to pitch in on the feed from now on. Really, the chicks don't add up to all that much, but the turkeys had been $6 each, well, we only had to pay for 4 of mine. So I need to pay her for those at least, the guineas were fairly cheap, and the chicks I got tonight were $1 each. But then she's bought me 2 bags of starter feed, and a bag of bedding to use and feeders and waterers... it adds up lol
I'm going out to her house tomorrow, and she's got a rabbit cage I can bring home with me, once they're all in cages, I should be able to stack them up and make it work that way.
My roommate didn't mind the 4 chicks I bought last night... but... when he saw I came home with 18 more tonight... um... lol He doesn't really mind all that much, but I think he thinks I'm about as crazy as our friend now lol He had told me before we went into town that we might get a few chicks from our friend because we needed more hens... well... we've got enough now lol Hopefully I didn't wind up with too many cockerels... if I did we'll have to butcher some or give some back to our friend...
Obviously I won't be able to tame them all. Going to focus on taming the guineas definitely, so they're less likely to run off when I put them outside, and going to work on the turkeys, and try to get at least a couple of the chicks pretty tame.
No, I'm not forgetting about my recovery in all this, been doing some reading at least and talking with other alcoholics. Talked to my sponsor today, she told me to go ahead and read step 2 in the 12x12, then she'll have some various things I need to read also and we'll get together soon. Wasn't getting to meetings all week because my back was so messed up after working around here last weekend... and my sleep patterns have been so screwed up that I'm up all night a lot of nights then worn out the next day... But got to one last night. I'll try to get home tomorrow in time for the meeting I go to on Saturdays... gotta go out to my friend's to take them stuff they need and pick up some things and get our laundry done. Actually I think there might be a meeting where she lives tomorrow night, need to look that up.
Ok, enough rambling... need to go dip my chicks' beaks in water to make sure they drink... they're pretty young... then get to reading in the 12x12.
My friend said that's the last of the chicks she's buying for the year... so I suppose I'm done too lol Cuz I can't get them that cheap without her buying them in large quantities... That's probably a good thing lmao
Lisa--that's a great idea; that is about creating a website to put your farm and critter pics up on . . . not that I don't enjoy you sharing them here! :) I've been thinking about creating a blog page--not so much to feature me, but to post pictures of wee little animals and insects I meet and write little stories about them or descriptions. It's better than TV, right? Laura
