Still in a lot of pain from my back...

First dr I saw said it was nerve pain, but didn't run tests or anything.

Second dr I saw said it's not nerve pain. Thinks it's muscle spasms. Sent me in for xrays and set up physical therapy.

Xrays come back, don't show anything.

I start physical therapy, physical therapist doesn't think it's nerve pain or muscle spasms as there was no tenderness or soreness when he pushed on my muscles.

The last dr I saw, the one that thought it was muscle spasms, said if the xrays came back fine, we might do an MRI. When I got my xray results they didn't say anything about that. So I called them back yesterday and asked about it, they still haven't gotten back to me.

Today, second PT appt, asked him about getting an MRI, and he doesn't think I need one. What he had said at my first appt is that he didn't think either of the drs were right, but that he wasn't sure what it was, but said PT should fix it. (some one asked if I'd trust someone to work on my car if they said something like that... "I don't know what it is, but I can fix it!")

I told the PT today how bad it gets, riding in the car makes it worse. I can't take the 30 minute drive into Lincoln and sit through a meeting and make it back home without being in serious pain. After PT today, my inconsiderate boyfriend decides to go on a joy ride, so I was in the car for probably a total of 3 hours today. Now I'm in serious pain and out of muscle relaxers, so having to depend on Aleve that doesn't work.

The PT today said something along the lines of me just having a problem with general back pain and that PT will strengthen my back and fix it... I'm 23 years old!! 23 year olds generally do not have back pain like this without some cause for it!

I don't know if I should just go on into the hospital when it's this bad, or if I should call my dr on Monday and insist they do an MRI to figure out what's wrong...  *sigh*

I'm just so frustrated and hurting and sick of all this...

Hey Lisa,
I can sympathize with your back pain. It took about 4 years and numerous doctors to finally get a doctor to take my back pain seriously.
I couldn't sit in a position for more than a half hour without getting charlie horses thru-out my back. My legs calfs and feet would cramp up.
My lower back would feel as if water was streaming down my butt and into my legs.
I have sciataca, arthritis, and a bulging disk...I dealt with all this pain for like I said ...4 years. I was sent to a pain specialist who has been giving me Spinal Injections.
My life is completly different and pain free!!!!
Hopefully this has helped you in some way.
Take Care
Nancy Jo

I finally got an MRI done a few weeks ago, and saw a pain management specialist almost two weeks ago who started doing a series of caudal injections (into the tailbone). I am starting to get some relief, and hopefully with a second set of injection this coming Tuesday, I'll be done. If not, we can do one more set of injections.

I have no problem being assertive with medical personnel when it comes to getting a problem diagnosed.

My physician is the one who ordered the MRI and the referral on to the pain specialist.

Keeping talking loudly enough that someone hears you!

To Be or Not to Be Pain Free: The Mindbody Syndrome

Here is an interesting article about back pain:
http://www.tms-mindbodymedicine.com/medscape1.htm

I am not suggesting that this is your problem, but rather, something interesting to read for anybody who has back pain.

I'm someone who knows about pain. I've had 4 cervical discs fused in less than 3 years.   The good news, I was happy I did it......the bad news, I have a 5th one that has herniated.  I Have degenerative disc disease, and each time my surgeon tells me "we'll pray it's the last, but ....."

I'm so blessed to have a good GP, who sent me to an excellent neurosurgeon.. They listen to me and if they didn't, I'd find one who did.

I would not want to be in the hands of doctors that I had to "insist" anything.  Sounds like it's time to find a new one. You're in charge, hun, so take charge, please.

p.s. try ice packs. worked for me for some temp. relief, the colder the better. Heat made mine worse.
