I won $50 from my little brother today because he fell for the hype and felt like he HAD to drink and lose our standing wager on stupidbowl Sunday. (What is that anyways? Why superbowl? What’s so super about it? Why not super “plate”? Super “carafe”? Super salt-shaker? Anyhow- I told him I’d go double or nothing and he bit. I suppose I’ll pick up that hundred on March 17th. Ahhhhh gotta love the Irish.
I love my little bro and guess that it's only a matter of time before he gives up the whole booze thing entirely. He's a strong little bugger (He's like three inches taller than I) and the youngest. But hey- I'd better take all his money while I have the chance!
Geez- there’s a laugh- holidays. I just looked up what the next drinking holiday is and had to look at all of the ridiculous holidays the U.S. has stuck in the calendar just to give the economy a boost. And what’s up with Columbus day? Are we still acting out that charade? Columbus missed his mark, went looking for a shortcut to china and found the Bahamas. He wasn’t the first to land in the Americas and his supposed “discovery” was attributed to his cartographer. He began a pretty heinous reign of slavery, abuse, disease and terror on the native inhabitants wherever he landed and generally wasn’t the best thing that ever happened to the Arawaks.
Anyhow- my ongoing rash of nonsequiters aside- I think this will be my new racket- making side bets on who’ll drink first. I can keep this up forever and make a decent living at it just with my family alone (Geez- I have a couple cousins that are good for every holiday right down to Yom Kippur and Canadien Boxing Day!) I can make a guaranteed buck or two on the 4th of July, New Years, Christmas parties are a shoo-in, the odd birthday here and there, Labor day weekend and Memorial day weekend oughta be good for a couple bucks. And Saint Patty’s day- the Holy Grail of drinking holidays.
Yep- I’m down for a few bucks until this racket runs out its line.
All kidding aside- I absolutely have to love when a couple of the old timers at my home group refer to those "drinking holidays" as their next membership drive. I love AA if for nothing else* then for the constant rhetoric- there is no place I've ever been where you constantly hear such great stories and such frank comedy about such an otherwise serious issue.
Anyhow- Good morning people. Hope you're having a fantastic day. :)
*and of course there's more, but I'll leave that rant for another day.
I have to agree with you about Columbus and his day. Being American Indian mix myself. I can't believe people are still looking at him as any kind of hero.
The rest of it, well, thanks for sharing. I get in moods like that too, where I look at things like Janis Joplin did, Kosmic Blues.
Keep coming,
love in recovery,
amanda

Ah don't take too everything I write at face value. I'm a wise ass at heart, a mischeivious practical joker. On top of that I love semantics and cant resist a good story.
I've been tempted in the past to buy both the columbo box set and the Rockford box set. Love those shows.
Colombo would have found the super secret northwest passage.
I can just picture him in his trench coat with his cigar, talking to the arawaks: "So lemme get this straight- and forgive me for asking but I forget stuff... but I worry. I mean, little things bother me. Little stuff. I'm a worrier. I mean, little insignificant details - I lose my appetite. I can't eat. Cant sleep. My wife, she says to me, 'you know, you can really be pain.' Gotta love her....Where was I again?"
