Sober Quote for Today, Wednesday July 15, 2015

"I tried to drown all my fears but the bastards learned to swim."

I used to be able to "forget" about my fears with just one or two drinks. Then the longer I drank and more I drank it was taking more to "get my mind off" of my problems. Eventually, 2 became 4, 4 became 7 or 8, then later 16. The amount kept going up until I was drinking over 20 drinks a day, every day. My drinking days went from once in a while, to once a week, twice a week, then eventually every single day. My drinking time went from nighttime after 5:00 pm to sometimes during the day and at night as well, to earlier in the day but after noon, to the morning, working up earlier and earlier in the morning until as soon as I awoke, I was walking to the nearby 7-11 to get wine and/or beer.

I don't know who originally wrote that quote above. It does "ring true" with me and my experiences. Because I was certainly trying to drown all my fears by drinking, and the "bastards learned to swim".

You all stay sober and alive.

LMAO hopefulone, ...

Don't think I ever heard that one ... love it ... oh, b.t.y. (by the way), my drink'n progression was a whole lot like you described for yourself ... by my early 50's, I was at least a case of beer a day, with vodka in a water bottle to get me by at work (when I had a job) ... we were really sick, huh ??? ...

Love ya and God Bless,
Pappy

Glad you like the quote, Pappy. Vodka in a water bottle? Glad I didn't think about that, or I would have prob. done it.

I just "revised" this song from the past..("Those Were the Days")

"Those were the days my friend,
We thought they'd never end,
We'd drink and dance
Forever and a day...
We lived the life we'd choose
Black out on tons of booze
For we were drunks until we found AA!"
