I have always understood "its message" to refer to the message of recovery from alcoholism as described in AA's 'Big Book'.

And the context of this in the complete wording of Tradition 5 is to point out that carrying this message is our primary purpose, and the purpose of the AA group is not to provide other things like employment services, medical advice, financial advice, marriage counseling services, psychiatric services, etc.
