Okay, up again at an early hour (4th time in a week) due to strong to severe thunderstorms ... found myself (again) on the front porch watching the storm pass through @ 2:30 a.m. ... and this time it was really pretty awesome, and I gave thanks to the Lord for such a display of His/Her awesome power ... I did mention I could do without the 'house shaking' booms that scare the 'you know what' outta me 'n Rose ... plus there were tornadoes in neighboring Kentucky last nite as I went to bed ...

Happy Belly Button Birthday to me(62) ... thank you Lord for the superb lightening display to start my day ...

As I sat on my porch thinking of the lost sleep, I thought of Jade's post mentioning the insomnia that comes to us during detox ... ... ... I could be wrong, but I think she was looking for replies to help her understand what lies ahead for her ... Don't know about anyone else, but for me, insomnia lasted longer after each time I detoxed ... - meaning- ... I had trouble staying sober for 13 years ... and each time got worse, never better ...

The last event, a few years back now, it took me nearly 5 to 6 weeks to get more than a couple hours sleep in one night ... weeks 1, 2, & 3 detoxing, I had virtually no sleep what-so-ever ... So, I've come to believe our sleeplessness is directly proportional to how heavy we were drinking, and for what length of time ... the worse I got, the longer it took to recover ... Oh WOW, I really don't miss that misery at all now ... today, I sleep like a baby!!! ... (okay, until the lightening bolts strike right outside my bedroom windows, LOL ...)

Okay, ... time for more coffee ... ... ... (@ 4:19 a.m.)

One major observation I made as I continued in AA in early sobriety was names of people, that is remembering them. When I first started going to meetings, I met a number of people and the the next time I went to that meeting I had a hard time remembering any bodies name. It was embarrassing to me because they seemed to remember mine. The longer I stayed in the program the better my memory got. Not too hard to figure out for this juice head. Now, if I could just remember where the hell I put my glasses or my car keys. Progress not perfection. Have a good sober day Pappy.

Thanks JJ, ... I usually know where my glasses and keys are, ... it's the walking into a room to get something and forget why I'm there that's get'n to me, LOL ... and it's not just daily, it's about ever room I go into now, well, except the bathroom maybe, LOL ...

Have a good day yourself ... (I need to find an old 'youtube' clip about this subject, and post it for ya ...)

He went through treatments a few years ago (when I was new). Did radiation every morning (drove in - went in the tube for 15 minutes - drove home) for many weeks, and has been cancer free ever since.

I did move a little closer to him - I'm only an hour now, so it doesn't feel like a 'trip' at this point. We spent a lot of time together over the summer at the lake.

WOW Dean, ... you go'n without coffee for a reason ??? ... blood pressure ??? ... Oh man, ... a morn'n with no coffee puts me in a real bad mood ... I had to go without it for several tests I recently had to take (medically) and I mean I was a mess without my coffee ... when I got home I'd drink nearly a whole pot to get 'caught-up', LOL ... That HAS to be akin to stopping smoking ...

I know no one would want to be around me for a while if I stopped drink'n coffee or through away the cigs ... but 'Congrats' to you if this was your choice!!! ...

Yeah Pappy it was my choice. I quit before for about 6 month but relapsed when on a ski trip. I realized it was causing me shortness of breath (Caffeine constricts your blood vessels) when I exercised, skied, rode my dirtbike.... I was losing sleep, which causes weight gain, and stress, memory loss... enough was enough. Now I'm drinking herbal tea and enjoying it. I was also getting arthritis in my hands, swollen joints, knots on my knuckles. I started drinking ginger tea with turmeric and cumin, arthritis is completely gone.

Oh wow, again ... ya know, I just might be able to go without coffee if I had a hot cup of tea ... and the benefits you're describing is making me do a double take ... and if you're still do'n your scuba thingy, I can see why you'd make the change ...

You really got my attention at the mention of arthritis ... and the swollen joints and knots on knuckles ... I fig'rd that was a build up of uric acid in the blood ??? ... same thing that causes gout ... ??? ... does the herbal tea fix all that with the absence of coffee ??? ...

I like to know as well. Do you blend your own tea, Dean? I know they make ginger tea but I never saw it with turmeric and cumin. If you do, may I have the recipe or a link to one, possibly? It may help my arthritis as well. Thanks.

P.S. Happy Birthday Roger. How about some cake?

 Birthday-Cake-2.jpg

or maybe some ice cream?

Seems like old times, doesn't it? LOL

Oh Lord Mr. David, ...

Good thing I just set a bowl of chocolate cake flavored ice cream in front of me, else I'd be up get'n some right now, LOL  ... it has some age to it and I felt it necessary to check to be sure it hadn't gone bad, LOL ... and I must confess, I made two dozen cookies and two pies late yesterday ... Funny thing is, I hadn't been craving any sweets until I read what the 'side effects' of my hormone treatment were ... they say weight gain is one of them, in addition to some not so nice effects ...

yeah buddy, turned the big 62 yesterday ... noticed I've got hair grow'n out my ears and grow'n out my nose, and my eye brow hair has been growing out of control like a bunch of wild weeds ... darn thing is, the back center part of the hair on my head has disappeared ... and there's no baldness in my family, go fig'r ...

Ahhhh, the pleasures of aging ... ... ...

I hear you, Roger. My hair is so thin it's hardly recognizable. My wife bought me one of those baldness sprays as a joke. Who knows, I might need it for my toupee later on.

P.S. Here's a sure fire remedy for sleep deprivation.

I've never seen it in a tea either - and I'm sure I wouldn't drink it - even just ginger tea is one of the worst things I have ever choked down. However - I have been taking Tumeric (organic) & Ginger (organic) (capsules) for the past 3 yrs and it's the first and only thing that has cured my back pain, bursitis in my shoulder - and arthritis in my fingers! It really is a miracle!

Here is the what I've been taking every day - I take double the dose, so 2-3 pills a day:
www.amazon.com/Organic-India-TURMBTL-Turmeric-90-Count/dp/B000YC70XY/ref=sr_1_2

This is just the link to the tumeric but this company has all of it - and I also have been taking Milk Thistle seed (organic) for many many many years which helps with liver function and over all health, arthritis and stuff.

Gosh, reading this thread, I learned a lot. Didn't know that caffeine restricts, or contracts blood vessels and that could or would lead to shortness of breath. i struggle with breathing a lot, COPD, have to use a emergency inhaler from time to time. And yes, still smoke cigs like a idiot. But I believe that will be coming to a end in near future. I know it will. But coffee too? Gawh! I am not real sure I'm ready to do all that! LOL But hey, I am only going to quit putting this stuff in my body to improve my quality of life and maybe increase its longevity, right? (as though there should be a better reason, or I need one, still sick in denial at some level I guess).

arthritis in my fingers/hands... and this herbal stuff called Tumeric and Ginger in capsules could help it? The arthritis I am experiencing is fairly mild, but any thing I can do relatively simple to help deal or eliminate its discomfort, I probably need to be hearing about right now, before it continues to progress.

My sleeping habits are ridiculous to most people. I am a late nighter, 1, 2, 3 am going to sleep, and up at 4, 5 or 6 am. This is not new. I have been doing this as long back as I can remember. Don't think it started as a result of getting sober, but before then, for fear I would miss out on some kind of action or something. Or I'd lose the opportunity to create some in those sleeping hours. LOL I have become a napper though. When I can lay down for a few hours, and catch a few z's I do.

I am not healthy or in good shape. If I weigh a buck forty, I'd be surprised. I'm 56 this year and about 6 ft tall. Work like a horse, but I am feeling my age and the lack of healthiness these days.

Dean, you are in great shape, I wish I had taken care of myself as well as you seemingly have.

I am moving into what people call their golden years and all I can foresee is me having to work until the day I die, or die trying to.

So, here I go off to work again, and probably stop by a GNC to see about getting some Tumeric and Ginger.

Thanks for the info

John

Hey john... hard to find organic... but online.... so ask to smell it... If it's not smelling strong then it's probably all filler. Take 3 times the amount until pain is gone and swelling gone. .. then u can go lower on dose unless you notice you need more again. I'm no doctor so be your smart and wise self and listen to me. Lol!!!

Blessings

Ok, so my wife found a Chinese Tea shop in St. Petersburg that is family owned and they own their tea business in China. The Tea is organic Turmeric Ginger. Like Tasha said I drank 3 cups in the morning and 3 at night for about a week and then eased up. Swollen knuckles went away, little red bumps went away, soreness gone. It seems to have a cumulative affect, takes a little while to get into your system and stays in. I quit drinking the tea for a week and some soreness returned.

Now I did do a lot of reading and inflammation and it causes all kinds of problems and damages joints the longer it's allowed to continue. There are a lot of different types of arthritis so results may vary.

With that said, I looked at what can cause inflammation and eating salt or salty foods was a big part, along with not drinking enough water and lack of potassium. So I did some more reading and there are vegetables and fruits that are anti-inflamatories that will help, which I did. So I went on a salad diet with olive oil and vinegar with a little bit of chicken or reduced salt tuna for protein. I got sliced unsalted almonds (great source of protein and Omega 3) that boosts good cholesterol - LDL. I cut out sugar, processed foods, salt, ate lots of fruit and this awesome Tea. Turns out I am taking Cumin separately, it's not in the tea.

Results were, sleeping better, headaches gone, arthritis gone, blood pressure returned to normal, stress way down, lost 8 lbs. and feeling better overall.

here's one of the articles I read that sparked my interest in diet change to fight arthritis. My mother (and grandmother had) has RA bad and I'm hoping not to go there.

St. Pete, ... ... ... Hard to find this tea locally ... started to order some and give it a shot ... Question ??? ... it appears to come in 'tea bags' or by the oz. in cans or bags ... I started to order the bags, for convenience, but thought I'd ask if you know of a difference, and if you get it not in a bag (tea bag), do you need a special setup to brew it ??? ...

Thanks

never seen the tea bags, they may work better. I use about a table spoon and it makes 4 coffee mug sized drinks. Give it shot it's working well for me. tastes pretty good too.
