Sober in Senegal and looking for other sober people
Permalink

I just moved to Senegal, West Africa and I am looking for other sober people. I contacted World Services and they gave me the name of one person but he just moved back to the States.

If you are sober and are in Senegal, please contact me. I would love to meet up! or at least talk on the phone.

Thanks!

Aloha Sober in Senegal and if you have the time...bet you do...consider starting your very own AA meeting where you're at.  I don't know the dynamics of alcoholism where you're at however I do know that our life threatening disease is global and taking meetings to where they once never existed has always been very good and then very good for me cause I always had one to attend myself.  It isn't hard...takes dedication and integrity and a room with a window to the rest of the fellowship.   MIP fellows are very very helpful and supportive so while our (((hugs))) are cyber and our voices in black and white we are here for you and every other alcoholic in Senegal.  "When anyone, anywhere reaches out for help...I want the hand of AA to always be there and for that I am responsible".   In support.

Hi Hattie,

Welcome to the MIP forum!st I know there is a fellow (Gonee) who is in South Africa, he might have some insights on what to do. Jerry's suggestion of starting a meeting might be a good option. Of course we are always here for you also.

Peace,

Rob

Nothing in Senegal as far as AA is concerned. Best is to start a group in Senegal. Send an email to World Service GSO and they will send you a starter kit with literature and also a international directory of groups worldwide. In Africa as far I know, AA is active in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya. Feel free to email me at goneenaiker@gmail.com. You can also log on to www.aanonymous.org.za/ or www.aasouthafrica.org.za/.

Thanks for your mail, Shiela.

There are 13 million people in Senegal and it's growing rapidly in population. So, there gotta be plenty of alcoholics.

SIS, I hope you can find some of them and make contact.

It may be that there is an AA group or meeting but that it is not listed. If not, maybe you will start AA in Senegal!

Hi Sober1 ... just stick here close to us for a while, everything will work out soon ...

You DO know you can PM (Private Message) others on this board, right??? ... ... ... go to 'User Details' at the top right of this page and click ... this will take you to another page, where, on the middle left side, you can click on 'New Message' and then type in the 'board name' of the person you wish to send a message to ... this way, phone numbers are not broadcast here on the board for the whole world to see ... (keeps down 'crank' calls) ... ... ...

For you?, ... 'Gonee' and 'soberinsenegal' are you're best, closest, allies ... ... ... like I said, stick close with us here until you get established ... we love you and are with you in spirit ...

Pappy

Dear Pythonpappy,

Someone contacted me from the postings here and I now have information that there is a weekly Tuesdays meeeting in Dakar City in Senegal at a place called Ouakam.

I will be attending my first meeting here next tuesday on 30th May 2013 and Iam really excited to have found a place to meet with people who know my disease and understand me.

God Bless you for the concerns and words of encouragement. AA is truly a family.

If anyone needs information on AA in Senegal now I will be more than willing to help.

Thanks for caring.

John.

That's great news Sober1, ... ... ... as you know, our whole program is based on one alcoholic helping another alcoholic ... therein lies the 'peace and serenity' I had always sought after ... glad to know you brother ... please stay in touch and let us know about your journey ... we can be your home away from home ...

God Bless,
Pappy

Not to make this about me, but heck. I love this thread. Brought a smile to my face, seeing where it has gone. AA is the greatest.

Welcome to MIP Louve, ... glad you found us ...

I hate to sound negative here, but John(Sober1) hasn't accessed this board since Apr. 27th ... ... ... We haven't heard from him since then ... I didn't want you to be checking the board feverishly trying to make contact with him ... you may try sending him a PM(Private Message) by clicking on 'Sober1' then 'Send Message' in the left middle toolbar ... I don't know if it works this way for everybody, but when someone sends me a PM, I always get an 'Email alert' saying I have a new message here ... ... ... cause I wouldn't 'hold my breath' waiting for him to respond on the board here ... just sayin' ... ... ...

Love ya and God Bless,
Pappy

Hi there Sober in Senegal.  I too am in Senegal.  I just happened upon this website.  I am sober and have been always.  I am here on assignment and am looking forward to bringing my nephew here next year, but am desperately looking for a group that he can join during our last few months in Dakar.  I'd like to speak privately, if you would respond to me.  I appreciate it!  Thanks.  Ms. LuLu

Hi L,

I was just wondering if you have found the details for the AA meeting in Ouakam?  I would very much like to have a contact phone number or address if you have it.  I am a member of the Dakar Women's Group which is an English speaking charity organisation based here in Dakar.

We are in the process of updating the DWG guidebook, which is basically the go to guide for all things Senegalese from grocery shopping to medical care.  I have discovered that the previous editions are very much lacking in any information relating to addiction or mental health services.

I am sure you understand how challenging Senegal can be at the best of times and I have personally seen families ripped apart by drug addiction, depression, and alcohol abuse in Dakar.   I would like to include a list of health services and contact details for those in need.  Ideally, it will consist of local points of contact for meetings ( it seems they are almost non-exist) to web addresses/ 24 hour call centers or the like, as a starting point for help.

Any information you can offer would be a big help.  Thanks every so much!

K

Hello Ms Lulu,

I haven't had any luck in trying to find an AA meeting or group, I have been actively trying to locate one in Dakar for our guidebooks alongside separate groups for marital problems.  I am sure it would be such a benefit, but I have no idea how to set up or offer the opportunity to join the group without invading anyone's privacy.

It was suggested to me by a local therapist that it might be an opportunity to start a group.  I am not sure how this would work.  I am going to do a bit of research and let you know how it all works, and maybe you could create a group that would be a safe listening place to help you through the rough times.  I will post what I find.

Take care, K

Hi Kenya.  I am so happy to hear from someone as a result of my numerous posts.  Are you in Dakar?  If so, I'd like to speak with you. Not sure if this message is confidential or not.  I will try to send you a private message with my phone number.  Thanks.  Lulu

Ms LuLu,  until you find or start a meeting, you can participate here or in several online real time meetings.  You can start by sharing about your situation and how drinking is interfering with your life and the problems that you are having stopping.  Try it and see what happens.  smile

if anyone has up to date info about AA Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in Senegal 2014 it would be much appreciated

si quelqu'un at-il les dernières infos sur les réunions des AA Alcooliques Anonymes au Sénégal 2014, il serait très apprécié

thanks/merci

@stpetedean

if you have no information that is helpful please keep out the conversation - it is not about you  - finding a meeting south of the Sahara is not easy and white noise just clutters the search .

There was another discussion thread here recently about meetings in Senegal, and I replied with some info I found on the internet about meetings in Dakar. Here is a link to that thread:

http://aa.activeboard.com/t58140714/meetings-in-dakar-senegal/

I hope this helps.

EDIT: The last comment in that other thread has a link to an article in "La Palabre", the unofficial newsletter of the US Embassy and/or the CLO office in Dakar, and at one time the link went to some information about AA meetings in Dakar. But that site has apparently been changed since I put that link in my comment last month, and it no longer shows the info about the meetings.

But if nothing else, you should be able to contact them directly and they may be able to help you track down the info. They had it on their site just a few weeks ago, so they should know what you are asking about.

Silverdarling, this is an online forum...not a meeting finder. Dean is one of the moderators. We don't tell anyone to stay out of threads. All are welcome to share. Good luck finding meetings in Senegal. If you desire support and AA related feedback from all around the world, this site may be for you. Telling the moderator or anyone else here to basically "shut up" is not what we do here and you seem confused about what the site is for. Consider this a warning. Not a very good way to introduce yourself to our group.

@davep12

yes thanks, i had seen the link. unfortunately the page isn't in google's cache either. it's a good idea to call them.

@pinkchip

ok, if it's not a meeting finder please don't waste peoples' time by keeping threads open about finding meetings. or have 'it's only a discussion board' featured prominently on all pages. people do not start on your home page and read through. google doesn't work like that.

your moderator @stpetedean falsely presents that he knows something about AA in Africa. in the AA i know if you do not have any direct experience of a subject you do not pretend that you do and you do not waste peoples' time with irrelevancies. sometimes it's about butting out and not butting in. not using every question as an opportunity to prove 'how nice' you are.

please, feel free, ban me from the boards, self-righteous smuggery is not my type of recovery.

I guess censorship and greeting people with "shut up" is your type of recovery.

I am going to be 15 days in Senegal and was hoping for a meeting in Dakar or nearby. I don't really care if it is in English. I think it will help to just be in the same room with other sober people. I emailed two people on the thread - Damien and Paul to see if they are still there. If not, I would host a "mob" meeting at my hotel if anyone is there between 6/26  to 7/11. If anyone there sees this, PM me with your email and I will be in touch.  If not, I guess I will look for some ive online meetings.

Molly (still a pickle but sweet)

Hi! I am the person who originally posted this message back in 2012. There is now an active fellowship in Dakar. Damien is not living in Dakar at the moment but he should respond to your email. If you want, send me (soberinsenegal) a private message through this board and I'll give you the contact info of another person who organizes meetings. Safe, sober travels!

Also, while I was in Senegal, I became an active member of the daily Skype meeting first164yp. It is an awesome group of people. You can find more information here:

http://www.alcoholics-anonymous.eu/country_map.php?Where=AA+On+Line+Meetings

Participants call in from all around the globe, though the meeting is based in Europe. It kept me sober for the 2 years I was in Senegal.

Not in Senegal, guys..Australia.  Welcome or well done and lots of other positive words to mark your achievements.  3 months sober and this site is a window to the world.  Regardless of where we live, alcoholics share support through commonality, not difference.  Thoughts and prayers, John.
